Anything XP should have been killed with fire some time ago, but if it isn't I hope it's airgapped from the network.

Technically, W10 is EOL too.

Being SaaSs the major code releases are let wild, the earlier ones are made dud by the security update minimum ver checks

If it runs on Vista, I'd be really surprised if you can't get it working in comparability mode on something newer. Worth looking into. Also Vista, while yes out of support, is much LESS out of support than XP, and probably a better option if my former suggestion proves impossible.

Thats the real world
I have one client running his buseness on DOS based PC's . At least thats easy to move to newer PC's , but if his particular DOS program corrupts or
dies there is no longer anyone around that knows how to get it reconfigured/working. Too many hidden setup menu's & manually edited config files
I have another still on Win95 , replaced the original PC this year. Had to leave it with W95 though (actually thats now just booting into DOS)
These old systems with serial hardware interfaces are a headache to reconfigure , Win10 just isnt an option .

Just so many XP's still out there in NZ Business's . They just wont spend the $ to upgrade them , and thats usually the only reason in my experience :-)
They get replaced when they die .

The vast majority of DOS apps store their config files in the same directory as the program, so in most cases it should be sufficient to restore the app from backup where it'll pick up all the settings automatically.

I have some good news...

After the unwanted and unapproved (by me) push update twice crashed my PC into an unbootable state, and having followed this thread, I sought out the latest update via WindowsUpdate and installed it. No idea if this the same update that was being pushed to me. This has worked and my PC now is at 1709 and had been 16 something.

After rebooting it took a while to find it's network and the external monitor connected through a USB3 dock wasn't recognised. Downloaded the latest driver for the dock and now it appears to be all good. Fingers crossed.

So in summary: asking for the latest seems to have worked. Getting something pushed down my throat did not.

Maybe switch to Linux or Apple or....? Not trying to be facetious or anything, but you really need to accept updates if you're going to stick with Microsoft, and while they're not perfect by any means I don't think opting out of updates is the answer... especially from a security standpoint.

This is my problem with modern computing - if someone wants to skip an update right then and there they should be able to do it maybe not indefinitely but at least a few times its their property. I've had a critical issue that I've had to fix after being engaged on our work emergency support line only to have to wait on windows to complete an unexpected large update - and yes I keep it patched.

Fortunately I was able to to grab my wife's Macbook air configure my VPN, 2factor auth and other bits and finally do the job but it did cause a delay.

I can't really understand the complaints about updates. I was given notice of the Fall Creators Update being available yesterday on my workstation. I delayed it til the end of the day and installed once I had finished up. It took all of 5 minutes including a reboot on a 7+ year old machine.

Is it really so hard to administer your computer systems?

Mine takes 15-20 mins on a ~5 year machine. I keep it in hibernate to avoid this but you have to turn off/on periodically when it becomes unstable.

It is a PITA especially after using something like an ipad where you never have to devote your time to updates (ie waiting 10 mins after booting to do some work).

I would never buy another Windows machine. There is just too much all round time wasting.

Lias: Personally I don't think MS take it far enough, I believe they need to prevent Windows PC's that are not currently patched from having connectivity to anything other than the windows update servers, and bricking them at the end of support date.

That would be the tail wagging the dog would it not? It would be self defeating and pretty bad for MS's business.

Imagine the head lines:

The next version of Windows is available, it is called Windows Brick and is available from Firth building supplies for only $2.50 ea. It is the most secure version of windows ever as it is un-hackable, doesn't record any personal data, requires no power source and users will not notice in reduction in productivity as it weighs down paper as effectively as Windows 10 SP4.
