More and more as your "end user" are becoming more tech savvy.

More and more as your "end user" are becoming more tech savvy.

so wouldn't you expect these tech savvy users to know that you need drivers?

or just do a normal in place upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1?

/me sighs. You are missing the point (and plenty of end users reinstall OS's), could you imagine Apple shipping a new OS and then having Apple consumers require to download and install drivers to make it work on their Ipads?

MS wants their device to be a success, well making it a success means making it dead simple and seamless for people to use. You could even put a link to the driver pack on the desktop which would be better than nothing.

It really feels like a chore trying to give MS constructive criticism at the moment.

Reinstall your OS, get drivers from Windows Update

Reset your OS to how it shipped from the factory, PC Settings, General, Reset

One thing I've found that has come in Windows 8.1, is IPv6 support.

For some reason nobody here could get it running on dhcp on 8, But after installing 8.1 and coming here it appears to have fixed itself!

I will check it out tonight on my surface if I can find enough storage space to create a VM. Apart from improving the mobile networking features so I don't need to re-connect a gazillion times per day, I am hoping that they will have taken the time to improve the Modern UI apps so they contain the same features as the existing desktop ones).

Obviously the 8.1 Preview is unsupported on my Envy X2, it;s great so far only issue is now that the system turns off when you close the tablet with the dock connected

For once I fully agree with this. But then I am weird as I love Windows 8 in its present form after some initial driver hiccups. Windows 8 is why I switched to Windows Phone also.

HTPC Intel Pentium G3258 cpu, Gigabyte H97n-wifi motherboard, , 8GB DDR3 ram, onboard graphics. Hauppuage HVR 5500 tuner, Silverstone LC16M case, Windows 10 pro 64 bit using Nextpvr and Kodi

windows 8 worked fine for ipv6 for me. works in 8.1 too. but it didn't ask me my ip address, it just set dhcp :( and i use static ipv6 ip. but do have a backup dhcp server for ipv4. it's too risky having random hosts on ipv6 :/

i installed 8.1 on my desktop this afternoon in VM. Its a marked improvement over the Windows 8 RTM has the overall feeling that some effort was actually put into it; and a huge improvement for the app store layout.

The $40 upgrade price was quite appealing, but the product less so.

I still 1 XP and 2 Vista high performance machines needing upgrades - but can't bring myself to spend $500 on upgrades as a typical end user.

$120 on the other hand....====

It just a box with a licenced code on a card and the usual MS leaflets.
You download the upgrade as part of the install.

It's now clearance so you may need to ring around the shops to find out if they still have it.

Bought this to upgrade my Iconia W510 tablet from the Windows 8 standard Acer OEM version.

The upgrade worked perfectly, took about 20 minutes, including the download.

Which is why I changed my mind about buying the Surface Pro; That and the Sinclair ZX81 type keyboard on the Surface Pro.

Unimpressed. Still no option to enable the start menu, and now they're forcing us to use Bing with the search tool.

Nathan, as Microsoft's resident cheerleader that's your cue to tell us we're just holding it wrong.
