The reg entry option doesnt work. I tried it on a new Win7Pro install . The Win10 icon came back .

MS obviously dont want that Win10 notification to be able to be removed , I think thats just the way it is.

Double check you're using the right key. As the published guidance does work.

Never10 seems to do the trick nicely:

nathan: How to manage Windows 10 notification and upgrade options
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3080351

To suppress this offer through the registry, specify the following registry value:

Subkey: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate

DWORD value: DisableOSUpgrade = 1

Hope it works for me as i frequently gets notifications for up gradation from windows 7 to windows 10

freitasm: I have a Windows 7 HTPC in the lounge and hope to not have to upgrade this machine to Windows 10.

How do I stop it offering the upgrade?

Has someone suggested  GWX_control_panel.  ( http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/gwx_control_panel.html )

It can be run as a once off, doing the registry disabling or else it will also sit and run watching for more upgrades to come through.

It also:

1 - kills updates for sending you through to Windows 10

2 - kills the nag in the notification area

3 - removes all the downloaded crud that windows 10 pre-populates with

4 - sets other settings to keep you clear and free of Win 10.

That and the windows defender killer for windows 10 are two of my favorite tools right now.

its cool you can use 3rd party tools to do this, just a reminder that the official MS documentation does actually work without the need to install or run anything

Here's a complete registry file:

-- Snip --

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\GWX]

"DisableGwx"=dword:00000001

 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate]

"DisableOSUpgrade"=dword:00000001

 -- Snip ---

Copy and paste the part between the "-- Snip --" labels, save it as a .REG file, import it.

As described in https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3080351, the first registry value disables GWX, so you won't see the icon or any pop-ups suggesting to upgrade. The second value is specific to the Windows Update control panel and blocks the installation of Windows 10 from that angle.

That's it. That's really all you need.

Create it

Or just save my text as .REG and run it

I've read though, earlier in this thread?, that future updates can overwrite those registry values, so the official line might not be permanent?

Hence the appeal of something more active...
