This is exactly what just happened to my wife!

 

She was busy working on the laptop when it restarted by itself and started the Windows 10 upgrade.

 

She looked over at me and said "What did you do?!"

 

 

 

Microsoft can make all the excuses they like about how it was the users fault, they opted in to the upgrade blah blah blah, but for something to just restart the system without any warning, causing the user to lose any unsaved work!, is unacceptable!

 

Not to mention the down time now while they wait for the upgrade to install!

 

Microsoft to you (and everyone): No we never do that. We have told you this right from the beginning and you still want to argue. You did something wrong and it's your fault. Period.

Had a call yesterday from a club manager to say the club admin comp was updating to win 10 and what should he do. Well, it was well underway and now we just have to hope software like gate security, weather station and till management still works. He's been away for four weeks so no new backup either.

At the very least a full image would always be done immediately prior to such an upgrade as I would trust that more than the rollback option.

Just not good enough.

We are installing GWX control panel on all our clients to stop the forced update. 1 manufacturing client has specialised software dealing with a laser cutter, specialised cad tied to the cutter. Win 10 forced an update, removed drivers, killed his software, removed shares etc and wont roll back. Getting the specialists in from Japan to reinstall and in the meantime an $800 000 sits idle. Bloody unbelievable.

Another client it killed all their shares so we spent 2.5 hours resetting it all backup again. Neither said yes to an upgrade.

I know lots of people like win 10 but I just dont get it. What is so much better in Win 10 than Win 7? Seriously?  There is less security with password sharing for wifi, more security holes, less control of when updates roll in killing long processes (try parsing 40Gb of data on a Win 10 machine and having it bloody well update and roll over killing the process requiring a complete restart and a loss of 28 hours of processing) it auto kills software nad devices, it has advertising, you cant get rid of shockingly cruddy apps you dont need (xbox, shopping, weather etc - many of them come back when killed off) and even the log in screen takes an extra click to get started with. I seriously do not understand why it is considered better, especially in a business sense.

Seriously? That's it? Have you experienced Ms support and if support means forced upgrades, auto removing applications, changes to the desktop causing havoc and retraining, auto removal of drivers, forced advertising etc etc and the shocking support systems Ms have - then no thanks. I dont want them choosing what apps I can and cant have, forcing me to have apps I dont want, forcing upgrades that are harmful and the raft of other support options they foist on us with win 10. Just look at recent comments on what Ms support is doing to users at present. It sucks!!  It's my computer, not theirs. My choice, not theirs. my XP machines still run really well without updates from years ago, Vista ditto, win 7 ditto - the only thing seems to be MS backing off support of certain processors - inside of the support period.

No backups of a single point of failure control PC on an $800,000 machine?

I'd suggest immediately opening a support case with Microsoft NZ who will be able to find a way to roll back. It will be a complimentary call. I'm not in NZ but reach out if you don't get anywhere.

Not necessarily - there are a lot of cases showing Ms will change the setting that says don't do an auto upgrade and force an auto upgrade. There was a bout of it last year where the registry entry got ticked / unticked everytime an update happened. We would reset it, Ms would update and set the entry to allow auto upgrade again. Happened three or four times in a row - we killed updates on that machine. 

There was a new round last week - we saw a number of clients reboot their Pc to find themselves with windows 10. We have one who has the option of upgrade now or upgrade later and not a single sign of a begger off and dont upgrade button. We will need to reinstall Jade server on that Pc and of course, OneDrive never survives the upgrade - typical MS incompetence.  5-10 hours of downloading and re-syncing ahead of them.

Its not the $800k machine that's messed up, its the software that drives it. Also printer shares dont work as there is no driver suitable to windows 10. That site has at least three or four pcs with very specific requirements and drivers and software, to run heavy manufacturing systems. Most of them are not on the network otherwise my issues would have been four fold.

The overseas techs only finished installing last week ... released the machine for use and now.... bingo.  Same as one other machine, just finished installing Win7 Os after a drive crash, recovered all data, setup all systems, and the first round of updates over night, win10. Thankfully it rolled back and all I had to do was reset up shares, permissions, printers, ims payroll, db connections, drivers and  ....

It doesn't matter how you look at this - it's ludicrous, crass, uncalled for, imbecilic, bad practice, over bearing, bull pucky dip stick stupidity all round.

Backups are one thing but the cost of reconfiguring, restoring, downloading, setting up etc is still too high. No client should be forced to have to spend money, no matter how good the backups because the OS vendor is forcing intrusive breakage causing Os changes - not even updates, complete changes.

Also - how many Win 10 installs are crappy and slow with 100% disk usages etc after an OS upgrade. a fresh install works better - so even if we leave the win10 in place the machines often run like dogs until the Os is stripped out, a clean version installed and everything loaded AGAIN!!!

A standard user cannot install, reserve or schedule a Windows 10 upgrade, even a Recommended Update thru Windows Update. It requires local admin rights.

And as Local Admin rights are required to stop bugginess happening owing to UAC, etc many of our users have Local Admin rights. Also the setting that says let all users install updates, over rides the need for local admin rights.
