I just took my computer apart, took out all drives, and put in an SSD from my wife's old laptop. It wouldn't boot, so I plugged my drives back in.

Now I'm in a strange loop. Computer powers on, stays on 5 to 10 seconds, then turns off. Sometimes I get to a screen that says gigabyte dual BIOS, sometimes screen stays blank.

I've tried with just my system disk, with just a USB boot disk, and I've tried turning power off for 15 mins. Nothing helped.

Any ideas?

Are the HDD the only thing you unplugged? Any beeps during boot?  Have tried pushing the memory in to make sure they're firmly in place? Have you changed BIOS to AHCI by any chance?

Didn't unplug or touch anything else on purpose, will check those things. No beeps.

Can't access BIOS to change anything. Could be in UEFI. I don't know anything about that.

What happens if you try booting without any drives connected? Usually if there's no bootable drive you would at least get a message on screen asking you to insert some bootable media, if not the bios setup screen. Definitely check that you haven't knocked anything loose. I know a few cases often don't come with buzzer speakers anymore, so if yours doesn't have one (or it has been knocked loose) you wouldn't hear the beep codes.

No difference with no drives plugged in. Will check everything else plugged in soon.

I've just used a screwdriver to reset the bios cmos. It's told me the main bios is corrupt and is restoring from the backup BIOS. This did indeed fix it. Took a while to work out though. Thanks all for the help :)
