I often have to transfer big video files in a hurry from a Solid State Media card such as CF, SXS or SD card to my clients hard drive. This is usually done in a cafe on the way to the airport before they catch their flight back to Auckland.

The quickest (and until recently the best) way to do this was to navigate to the card folder, copy it to the clipboard and then paste the entire Contents folder to the clients hard drive. Then I do a quick check using "File Properties" to check that the camera card being say 27.3 GB matches the destination folder with exactly the same amount of GBs transferred.

I have used this technique without any faults since 2010, until I started using my Asus Zenbook i7 8GB RAM 256 SSD running Windows 10 last year. Since then I have experienced a problem several times where the copy function will only copy a percentage of the whole "Contents" folder, (say only 20.2 GB of the 27.3). I don't always have the time to recopy, so will send off the original camera cards with the client (something I am not that happy about).

There were never any such issues with my previous Sony Vaio laptop, can anyone shed an opinion on why this may be happening?

Ideally do a diff on the two folders to see what has been copied. There is probably a pattern. Beyond Compare is nice, there are others like Windiff etc.

Maybe as simple as hidden files on the source. Thumbnails or similar.

Sorry, never heard of something like that if the copy completes properly. Sounds to me like your copy job was interrupted.

While you didn't ask for tools, here are two that could help a lot.

  • TeraCopy from CodeSector.com is still the fastest utility that I've found. Also support queueing jobs unlike Windows which will try and write five copy jobs at the same time to the destination instead of sequentially.
  • FreeFileSync.net also have a very good folder compare / sync utility. Pretty fast & accurate time estimates & easy enough to update a destination folder.

It's more likely to be hidden files as @gzt says. But it might also be worth checking the file size allocation if your external storage is using some version of FAT. Check the file size vs size on disk. This article explains it better than I could.

But I don't think there would be 7GB of difference from this.

+3 on Teracopy... I can't remember how long it has been around for, but I've been using it for ages.

Problems with SyncToy is that is no longer supported and I've seen it get lost. Also it's not a file copy handler replacement.

I guess you are unlikely to go installing things on client machines, and it's best not to change folder view setttings either. That's a tricky one.

Unless folder view settings are remembered per card and not on an assigned drive letter basis?

No windows handy to try sorry!

The installation of TeraCopy actually prompts you for a 'normal' installation or a portable version. All built into one.

You could also try this is you want to go portable: http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/fastcopy-portable

Looks as if the OP is transferring stuff from a Media Card to a (clients) Portable HDD using their own Laptop. In that case, installing Teracopy, or FFS is a viable solution.

Thanks for the suggestions of using Teracopy, I will give this a go. Yes I am using my own laptop for the file transfer so its not a big deal to install Teracopy to my machine.

What un-nerves me is that when I believe to be copying the entire folder, not all of it gets copied and pasted. Weird.
