I tried a free use of the AVG PC Tuneup on a laptop. After it finished the laptop worked fine. Later in the day when the laptop was turned on the mouse and keyboard no longer worked. I tired troubleshooting in hardware and devices, it found problems with

"Standard PS/2 Keyboard has a driver problem"

"Synaptics PS/2 Port ClickPad has a driver problem"

"Microsoft USB Dual receiver Wireless Keyboard (Mouse and Keyboard Center) has a driver problem"

The troubleshooter was unable to fix these issues.

I tried to update the drivers it just said they were up to date

I tried a system restore, but the system restore did not work.

Any ideas?

Are there any other devices marked with '!' In device manager?

Also, In control panel > administrative tools > services, what is the status of the i8042prt service?

I went into Devices and printers and it has the ! in a triangle beside the computer and beside the "Microsoft USB Dual Receiver Wireless Keyboard (mouse and Keyboard)"

I went into services but couldn't find  i8042prt. Does it go by another name?

Could try. Just remove those items from device manager and restart the computer. Normally they will be reinstalled automatically on startup.

I uninstalled the drivers, and reset the pc, unfortunately it is taking awhile as it is installing 15 updates.

Unfortunately uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers didn't work.

For the keyboard there is an issue with both the

"Microsoft USB Dual Receiver Wireless Keyboard (Mouse and Keyboard Center)"

"Standard PS/2 Keyboard"

For the Mouse

"Synaptics PS/2 Port ClickPad"

But no issue with

"Microsoft USB Dual Receiver Wireless Mouse (Mouse and Keyboard Center)"

If you go into task manager and look at services, do you see i8042 something in there? sort by alphabetical.

Also, what model laptop and which o/s are you running?

hmmn . Lesson learnt ?

I assume you are using usb kb & mouse now ?
Restart & try & get into the bios , see if the kb/mouse work in the bios
Download a bootable CD, any bootable CD & see if they work when booted off that CD

Do a system restore , go back to before you ran the 'tune up '

It may of course be that both are faulty, it happens (bad internal cable or circuit)

I went into Task Manager and Services as you asked, and went down the list multiple times and can't find it.

I can use a USB mouse, but a USB keyboard wont work when plugged into the laptop.

As far as I am aware I can't enter bios without a keyboard

I tried downloading a bootable CD, nothing happened when I tired

I tried a system restore multiple times last night, they failed each time.

I had that crap tune up thing do a number on the USB 3.0 ports on a computer.

I had to find the .inf files for the device and do a right click and install on them to get enough back that windows would then attempt to install the drivers. Which then failed and I had to then go and update them from the device manager and choose them from the list which now had the driver to choose from.
