So what does everyone think about this new Windows 8?

How can this be an enterprise solution?
Should everyone be made to not only upgrade the OS, but also your monitor to include touch features?
Do you like the new Metro UI?

One thing I can't help but notice is how everyone is saying how fluid the o/s is, but its running on a Sandy 1.6Ghz i5 core processer with a 64GB SSD! Thats not exactly a slow machine for a Windows 7 Phone type interface.

i like how at the end he says "as you can see touch sensitivity is quite responsive" after failing to move the tiles about 4 times :)

does look good though, as a developer i would prefer to write a C# app for that than a objective c app for a ipad.

It's awesome. For enterprise, you will most likely use terminal server which would be part of Windows Server 8. You can always switch from the immersive tile UI to the desktop UI at anytime which would make it look like your tradtional Windows 7 desktop look alike.

Microsoft is pushing for mobility with the immersive tile UI when you are out and about, When you get back to work, dock the tablet and switch to desktop mode if you want. Windows 7 apps are compatible with Windows 8 as well.

Edit - I saw the entire keynote and they turned on/off and ran few apps on the ARM based tablets and it was still blazing fast operation on them.

Do whatever you want to do man.

I think it looks amazing, 100% win7 compatibility is wicked too. One thing of concern is the new files system, to get the most out of Win7 i would have to clean install then re install all my programs. I'll wait for the beta eagerly!

really impressed with the tablet ui, im planning on upgrading my ipad 1 next year, and if this comes out then not sure what ill buy an ipad 3 or a win8 tablet... apple has to do something really great to keep some customers.

oh i suppose if it doesnt support syncing on a mac, then ill stick with an ipad (my main machine is a macbook pro)

They are attempting to make a one-size-fits all solution-for deskop OS and tablet OS.

The danger is that they end up with a jack of all trades but master of none product.

For , typical desktop PC use, what features are going to be good for me? My pc is always on so fast bootup doesn't interest me so much.

Windows 7 does everything I need.I'm not sure there are any features in windows 8 that would compel me to upgrad.

One thing I'd like to see, is for windows 8 to automatically optimise for SSD use.

i just read this http://www.bgr.com/2011/09/13/sorry-apple-windows-8-ushers-in-the-post-post-pc-era/, i originally thought you would still have to sync a win 8 tablet, couldnt get my head around the fact the tablet is a full powered computer in its own right, and can run anything a laptop/desktop can.

unless something drastically changes with apple or there are some serious issues with win 8 and especially their tablets, i will be buying a win 8 tablet when they are released. full os on a touch tablet == cool, full os on touch tablet with specially designed touch interface == awesome.

btw im a mac fan boy.

No it doesn't.

There are a number of actions you need to take to maximise the lifespan of the SSD.

Here is an optimisation guide...

There are other things as well, such as ensuring disks always remain on---SSD's don't like having their power cut as they are busy even when idle.

Windows 7 doesn't allow selective drive depowering.

As for SSD, the advice i got from OCZ - the ssd manufacturer - about a month ago, was this: "At the moment, nothing special is needed except to not sleep the drive".

Your article that you linke is from the start of 2010. Thats nearly 2 years old.

after using a touch phone, i already find myself trying to swipe my laptop/desktop screen at times.

i expect that touch enabled machines will become the norm very quickly. You will see a flood of screens with it built in, and a flood of cheap touch screen overlays to convert existing monitors. right now there is no "demand" for touch on the desktop, but w8 will change that very qucikly.

You don't have to use touch features.

When another company uses a SSD version of their laptop on an i5 it's ok, but not for Windows. We should get on with times. SSD is getting more and more accessible in terms of cost. Windows 8 won't be here until mid 2012, by then SSD will be even cheaper and more readily available.

Have you used Windows Phone at all?

The only thing you really need from the OS is TRIM support. Other than this, use your SSD as you would use any other drive. Why "optimise" it, when it's a lot faster than HDD?
