Is it an option to have a conversation with said potential employer and let them know of the gap between the two positions, and that you'd like them to try and close the gap somewhat at least, and have them make clear what would be required from you, to finish the gap closing, that way you will know where you stand.

Yup - had that conversation yesterday, clearly outlining the gap.

It's the old "golden handcuffs" situation - my current job pays well, but also offers great benefits, with fully paid medical and subsidies for this and that and the other.

BUT - having thought about it overnight and the new potential employer raising the salary by a touch (as much as they could get sign-off for), I have decided I'll go for it. Mental health is more valuable to me than the financial aspects.

Good on you.

Monday morning here (Dec 20)  on the North Shore and it’s about 13°C.

Metservice ‘Local Weather Stations’ page for our area is showing temperatures in the 20’s - so I dig deeper and find all the data is from last Thursday afternoon - Dec 16.

What is the point of this page if it is so out of date.?

I raised this with MetService on Dec 20 and got a half-hearted and inaccurate brush-off reply.

Today, I received a reply that said:

“Thanks for taking the time to get in touch. Our local weather stations page has been affected by a data processing issue on our end since December 16th. Our team is aware of this issue and are currently working on a fix. Apologies for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience in the meantime.”

I dunno - just think this is pretty pathetic. The data has been out of date for five weeks.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Recipe websites that are 99% fluff and advertising when all you want is a few quick ideas. Especially on a mobile device

Also means that attempting to print gives you 2-5 pages of rubbish that you need to pick the recipe bits out from in between.

When a food vendor tells you they don't recommend consuming their products after the best before date. (Ours was unopened and stored in the fridge sour cream 4 days afterward).

Surely, this means the product should have a use-by date on it instead.

I'd agree with that assessment - use-by date is implying that it's got to be used by then. Best Before suggests that they can't guarantee it'll be at its best after that date.

Or ones where you have to read a 30-page essay on the cook's experiences in preparing the thing in order to get the recipe. "The best Baked Encephalos you've ever had [...] recipe brought back by my grandmother from old Czechoslovakia [...] marinated in duck's tears [...] hand-picked on a south-facing slope [...] just the right amount of exposure to sunlight [...] gerbil livers [...] dew-picked and flown from Iraq, cleansed in the finest quality spring water [...] blah blah blah blah blah". Just tell me what to throw in a bowl and mix up, dammit!

Two pieces of software that I use have recently been updated.

The release notes for one are detailed, and explain exactly what's new and what's been fixed. If printed, they come to 28 A4 pages. On top of that, there are a few instances of "for more details, see this other document". In short, you know precisely what you're getting from the update.

On the other hand, the complete release notes for the other product are quoted below.

Bug fixes

I can see both sides of that. I've had to write release notes for software that used the latter line because what was fixed was so obscure it would have taken a half-page essay to describe it, and no-one but the single person who reported it after 20+ years in the field would have even understood what the issue was, and they already knew it because they reported it.

A good balance is to list the major changes that the general public will actually notice and leave the rest as "Bug fixes/stability enhancements".
