Watched Frozen - 8/10, really enjoyed it. Love the end bit with Anna, was kind of unexpected. :)

Kinda wanted to watch this, but made the mistake of watching the trailer which just ruined the whole thing. No point in seeing the movie after that. =/

I finally got around to watching Primer the other day, and watched it for the second time last night. Good god, it is a brainf***. It's quite cool, but I was also still so confused after the second sitting (though starting to get the idea of what was happening) that I briefly went looking for some explanations online.

They confirmed the bits that I had already picked up, but even "simple" explanations of the other parts were too confusing for my simple self. Must admit it was late and I was just skimming through them though. I think I'll be better off just watch it a few more times to work out the rest.

I'd highly recommend it (to the right sort of person ;-) ) but be prepared to watch it a few times! :)

This is my favourite timetravel themed flick of all time. Interestingly, it cost under $10k to make and the actors and extras are all mates of the guys that wrote/filmed it.

It is a true example of how a movie can be clever and great with little experience and money.

I watched Ender's Game. It was okay because I have seen The Last Starfighter many years ago and they seem similar to me on many levels.

Ender's Game will have the same impact on your pre-teens and teens that TLS had on me back then but I'm not sure it's for thinking SciFi adults. I gave it a 6.5, your kids will give it a bit more than that.

Watched Captain Phillips the other night. It's a very "Merca!" propaganda machine type of movie. Based on the facts of the true story it painted a different picture than what happened too. It was a decent enough movie but it felt a bit like Team America in the end.

Also watched Rush last night. Great film and well played out rivalry. Awesome F1 scenes.

Yeah, I think I might leave looking at that until after my next viewing.

I love these sort of movies, but prefer to at least try and "connect the dots" myself before looking too much at the spoilers. That's why I just skimmed through a couple of the explanations last night - I just wanted a couple of pointers for the next viewing without completely figuring everything out. I'm not sure it's possible to fully figure it all out with this movie though ;-)

I came across the trivia on how much it cost too - $7k was the figure I think I read. Quite impressive that he did it for so little - granted there are very few special effects or anything like that, but if I had to guess how much it cost to make I would have guessed a lot more.

The Desolation of Smaug 3D HFR - 7/10

My wife and I saw this last Thursday. The obvious first - it's looong! Nearly 3 hours is pushing it, and while there wasn't as much "filler" as in An Unexpected Journey, it still felt too long. Overall, though, it was a pretty good story. I even survived the spiders scene, which I wasn't looking forward to. My main criticism is that the company of dwarves is too large for the screen, and even with 3 hours there's not much time for the different characters. At least in The Lord of the Rings we were able to identify with the supporting characters of hobbits alongside the elves, dwarves and humans. Here, I couldn't identify more than one or two of the dwarves - the rest just seem like background.

Also, it's the first time I've seen an HFR film. When the first one was released, I didn't subscribe to the critics complaints - change is a constant, after all. However, having sat through 3 hours of HFR footage, I have to agree with them. It's not right. Everything felt too fake and the immersion in the story was lost. It's hard to describe how a simple frame rate change can affect the core of the film so much, and I was surprised myself how badly it affected everything. It was really distracting - even 3D effects blend in after a few minutes. Right until the end I was noticing how fake it all looked, like those promo DVDs they show on display TVs in store. When the third film comes out, I'll be avoiding HFR for sure...

I recently watched The Lone Ranger, and I was gutted! Having grown up watching the TV series, I had great expectations. I was really looking forward to all that modern technology could bring to a contemporary movie version, and visually it didn't disappoint. The acting, too, was great (love Johnny Depp), but the dialog, the slap-stick humour....it was awful! It was like watching a Laurel and Hardy episode. I'm a huge movie buff, and I'm still reeling from this disappointment (almost as bad as when the All Blacks lose - bite my tongue!).
