My cheapie scale that runs on CR2032s and has touch controls is always powering itself on because there is something beside it near the touch area like a pan or whatever. Stupid design but the scale is red so that gets it a pass to still exist in the kitchen.

It also will turn off when part way thru adding stuff, so if I have to add 250ml of milk, and that one runs out at 100ish and I am opening another carton it will power down and I have to do maths as to where I was up to with adding it.

Heh, specs match my Terraillon.  Pretty sure it was whatever was on sale at Briscoes years ago.  Batteries seem to last a decent chunk of time (can't recall the last time I replaced them) but you definitely have to be aware of the timeout mid ingredient as noted above.

That seemingly every manufacturer of kitchen scales thinks you have a kitchen without a single power point, and that you would rather feed the thing batteries all the time.

Hard agree. Additionally, I've found that if I take the batteries out of the scale after use, and keep them in a wee ziplock bag with the scale, they last about 10 time longer than they do if I leave them in the scale while its stored. Given that I only use the scale once a month or so, I was having to put new batteries in every 4th or 5th use. Since I've been removing them, I'm still on the same set of batteries more than two years later. I'd much prefer a plug, but I can't see myself attacking it with a soldering iron to attach one.

It's as if the switch was never invented. That's 'progress' for you.

HRV. I bought a house with a HRV Ventilation system The one with the low tech box with a fan, in the ceiling.

About a year ago, I got several heat-pumps quotes, including one from HRV. They were high, so I didn't use them.

So I start getting calls asking me if I want to replace the filter in the low tech box (unrelated to the heatpump quote).

I literally say "no, I'll call you if I want to replace the filter. Do not contact me again."

About 6 months later I get another call if I'd like to replace my filter. grrrrr.

I tell them to remove me from all customers lists, and put me on the do not call list.

I'm suspecting I'll probably get another call in 6 months though.

I needed PI insurance so looked at the most common website - bizcover. Foolishly I entered my phone number and of course I then started getting pestered with calls. Fortunately they all had the same caller ID so easy to block the number.

Measles in 2023 in our supposed first-world country.

How much longer will this incompetence be allowed to continue!?

Infuriating.

I think I read somewhere that in the USA, children that are not vaccinated cannot start school. Seems sensible.

An email did the rounds at work where the topic was safety, and the sender apparently thought it would be funny to include a GIF of someone being run over. Most of the recipients found it appalling.

You can send them back a link to the Staplerfahrer Klaus safety video, which I've deliberately not linked to for the squeamish. If you don't mind splatter movie-style video then its worth a Google and a watch.

Edited to add: A link for a version with English subtitles is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-lc70Mjp-U, you'll need to cut&paste it across to view it.

It's not caused by incompetence, unless you're referring to the parents.

Parents bear some responsibility but in many cases it's ignorance rather than incompetence.

Immunization programs are not run by parents nor are promoting or education programs.

There has been a continuous and steady decline since 2017. You can draw your own conclusions as to why.

The number of businesses these days that don’t bother opening on Saturdays.

In the past fortnight:

A main brand car dealer
A locksmith
A tow bar fitting company
A courier office

It doesn’t appear to occur to them that their customers might be at work Monday to Friday and therefore only available to do business with them on Saturday….

But antivaxxer campaigns, conspiracy theories, and web sites seem to be run almost exclusively by parents. And choosing to believe a random crank on Facebook rather than their family GP is also a parental decision.

I've got a Salter 1085 for which the batteries seem to last more or less forever, several years each, and it takes AA rechargeables so it's still (technically) on its first set of batteries. And it has a giant easily-visible display, and... it seems to be discontinued, because it's a really nice scale so it has to be replaced with shiny new models that are the same generic rubbish you can get anywhere.

You seem to be under the mistaken impression that anyone who doesn't vaccinate their kids is anti vaxx. That makes a very small number of the people who's kids are not vaccinated.
