It strikes me that many people's reasons for joining terror groups are not unlike the reasons they join gangs. They have no sense of belonging in the communities they live in.

Sounds a bit woolly to be honest.

There are plenty of people who do not feel they belong but by no means do many of them join criminal gangs or cults.

Americans took out several hundred oil transport trucks a few days ago. Russia has started a bit of the same. Neither want to damage the production facilities. Even Isis has been somewhat careful with that.

In the context of the previous discussion on attacks on civilians, the graph does not differentiate civilian and military. Some number of those deaths will be insurgent attacks on Iraq military rather than civilian for this graph.

Sorry but I don't buy that as a significant factor.

The attacks in Iraq are mainly targeted at civilians.
The body count (2003-10) was 60 civilians for one soldier.

Now (tonight) Mali. "Recite verses from the koran - and you get freed".

They (in Mali) may not be ISIS, but the message has got through - it's the way to achieve their goal.

The level of effort that Daesh put into recruiting is extraordinary. They spend a lot of time, care and attention. It is very effective starting at hello and ending many months or even years later. I have no doubt that many of these efforts are financially compensated.

In a civil war Yes. But those are different kinds of animals. Those that do their trade in a non civil war environment have different objectives. To harm non believers only.

This girl is a Muslim.

Her Muslim father tackled a Daesh suicide bomber to the ground and saved many 10's in a crowd from death and injury:
