Alleged organiser was a petty criminal disowned by his family:

Similar background to at least one of the others in the group.

It strikes me that many people's reasons for joining terror groups are not unlike the reasons they join gangs. They have no sense of belonging in the communities they live in.

Another Sikh enjoying his coffee has prompted a panicky call to police because his turban looked threatening, especially when combined with headphone wires coming out of his music player. Maybe people should only be allowed to buy phones after completing an IQ test.

joker97: Still have no idea where they get the money to fund their activities.

By selling oil from the fields they've overrun in Iraq & Syria, this is not Mickey Mouse money as they are raking in millions of dollars a month

Sounds a bit woolly to be honest.

There are plenty of people who do not feel they belong but by no means do many of them join criminal gangs or cults.

Americans took out several hundred oil transport trucks a few days ago. Russia has started a bit of the same. Neither want to damage the production facilities. Even Isis has been somewhat careful with that.

gzt: The graph has really only two major contributors. The massive spike of 3000 for September 11 then the rest are the terrible toll on Iraq.

In the context of the previous discussion on attacks on civilians, the graph does not differentiate civilian and military. Some number of those deaths will be insurgent attacks on Iraq military rather than civilian for this graph.

Sorry but I don't buy that as a significant factor.

The attacks in Iraq are mainly targeted at civilians.
The body count (2003-10) was 60 civilians for one soldier.

Now (tonight) Mali.  "Recite verses from the koran - and you get freed".

They (in Mali) may not be ISIS, but the message has got through - it's the way to achieve their goal.

So the best tip to come out alive is to memorize some arabic phrases and popular koran verses!

Those hyenas kill as many believers as non-believers.

There is nothing to buy. It is a number and you have identified that number for 2003-2011.

The level of effort that Daesh put into recruiting is extraordinary. They spend a lot of time, care and attention. It is very effective starting at hello and ending many months or even years later. I have no doubt that many of these efforts are financially compensated.

Daesh recruiting:

http://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/06/28/world/americas/isis-online-recruiting-american.html

"One in particular, Faisal, had become her nearly constant companion, spending hours each day with her on Twitter, Skype and email, painstakingly guiding her through the fundamentals of the faith. But when she excitedly told him that she had found a mosque just five miles from the home she shared with her grandparents in rural Washington State, he suddenly became cold."

In a civil war Yes. But those are different kinds of animals. Those that do their trade in a non civil war environment have different objectives. To harm non believers only.

Regarding the earlier discussion about Muslim support for suicide bombing:

This girl is a Muslim.

Her Muslim father tackled a Daesh suicide bomber to the ground and saved many 10's in a crowd from death and injury:

Her Muslim uncle says: “The problem is these people think that by blowing themselves up they are going to join the prophet in heaven. Our prophet is a prophet of mercy, our Islam is a religion of forgiveness, kindness, compassion, not a religion of killings and swords and slaughter.”

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/nov/17/adel-termos-martyr-father-became-saviour-beirut-bombings

Daesh have no worries about killing Muslim civilians anywhere just as they have done in Iraq for a long time now.
