Don't forget that for most of history religion and politics/national leadership were the same thing. It's only in recent times that state and religion have been separated -- and even then pretty much only in the western world.

So when you talk about past killings in the name of religion, you could just as correctly say they're in the name of politics.

Which sounds a lot like what we're hearing today.

I highly doubt too many people have gone round killing people in the name of atheism. People, who are atheist, kill people, but I don't think their motive is being an atheist.

I can't remember the last time I read an article of someone shouting "For atheism!!!" before chopping someone up or shooting someone down.

Ummmm ... so I'M a basket case by feeling a little angry that people go around hacking other people to death while claiming their cloud fairy friend is all great and powerful ?

Let me think do I still have imaginary friends ? no! I grew up and have the ability to question the things around me and make my own decisions, I'm not so pathetically weak willed that I need to suck up to invisible entities and their "chosen" representatives.

In my opinion religion is a hideous construct that promotes intolerance, and none of the religions out there do anything other than serve their own at the expense of all others, most are big pyramid schemes that suck in the feeble minded and desperate and twist them.

Interesting... Thanks, I'll give that a bit of a read I think.

The book shows examples of studies where two groups with complete opposite views were shown the same neutral TV commentary. Both groups said the TV commentary was leaning towards the other side. It goes on to show how people tend to read news/watch channels that present things in a way they believe while showing that one fact, while true, can be used to construe a false story by the media, simply by ignoring everything else around it.

Thats your opinion. But at the end of the day atheism is based on your belief that there is no God. In fact it can probably be classed as a faith too. Which is what? A religion upon itself.

Personally I don't have enough faith to be an atheist. :-p
