I have no idea how anyone could watch GOT without giving it a reasonable amount of attention. There's usually too many plots happening at once otherwise.

Watching it on a 100 inch screen sounds more fun than watching it at 4am cause I couldn't sleep with jet lag.

My flatmates told me they wanted to get into it, so we started watching it on our 65inch with a decent home theatre setup and I kept catching them on their phones, then they said it was too confusing....

I don't think I've ever been "triggered" before but damn that annoyed the crap out of me

It sounds like the darkness of the lighting was a common complaint, not just with Sky's feed. We struggled with Neon and geounblocking problems, so resorted to a less than legitimate source (much to my frustration, having paid for a legitimate source).

I found the outcome to be a little disappointing. Despite the badassery shown by Arya (and Lyanna Mormont, taking out the giant with a dragonglass dagger in the eye), I felt that the outcome betrayed much of what the show seems to be about - the triviality of the conventional power struggles for the Iron Throne, versus the existential struggle against the Walkers, being an allegory for climate change. Set against this, I fully expected the ultimate outcome to be the Walkers defeating the living, and the battle for the throne to be the ultimate red herring. But with Arya defeating the Night King, I read it as suggesting that we will triumph against the climate change monster (when I suspect GRRM doesn't share that optimism). It also means the next three episodes will undoubtedly focus on that pointless, petty power struggles, which to me completely undermines everything the show seemed to be building towards.

As I watched the battle unfold, I was taken aback by stupidity of the Dothraki charge (though it was well shot, showing their flaming "swords" slowly extinguish. But later tactics seemed equally unfathomable - once they lit the trenches on fire, why didn't Jon and Dany just line up their dragons and incinerate the walkers while they were standing there? I also expected there to be a bigger twist at the end than Arya just leaping on the Night King and sticking him with a Valyrian steel dagger - I conjured up all kinds of possibilities, such as Bran killing the Night King, or even the Night King bending the knee to Bran, revealing him to be the true "villain" (though each of these is just as unfaithful to the central allegory of the show - it just would have been a bigger twist, and could have let the bigger story play out).

Overall, I felt a little disappointed. As battles go, despite the grand scale, it didn't really have quite the same power as the Battle of the Bastards back in season 6. Also, with so many major players surviving, it feels like the stakes were never really that high (despite the whole dead vs living thing).

I agree about the ending of the episode. They tried to play it like Jon was going to kill the Night King but even that would have been a little disappointing... Sure I wanted him to die but there was so much mysticism surrounding him, his origins and the whole Walker story that having someone just come along and stab him kinda felt a bit lame. It should have been Bran and the Red Woman or something along those lines IMO, something with a magical element.

But the Dothraki can only do battle on an open field from horseback so that was probably their most effective play in all honesty. And the storm and dragon battle were the main reason why they didn't just use the dragons on the dead once the trench was lit, that was even said to have been the plan, having the dragons light the trench then it would be like fish in a barrel. Despite this there was one shot where Jon was on the wall to the God Wood, on a dragon, just staring at the dead behind the trench, go on mate!

I also think the battle would have been lame in the day time, regardless of being able to see more. I used neon to watch GOT S7 and found it completely and utterly dissapointing in terms of quality (blocky) and interface (flash anyone? in 2019?) and could see how this particular battle could have come across as blocky and pixelated. But this had to happen at night, it's the freaking army of the dead so many scenes in this episode would have been lame in the daylight. The scale was huge and the scenes were epic. So many chances to play with light and fire I think it worked so well.

Also why didn't more people die I mean come on. I love every character almost but the episode would have been way more effective if others had died. It would also make the next episodes more interesting. I kind of feel like now they are just going to pick themselves up and finish the job in Kings Landing now.

Perhaps it was the Sky feed but everything seem dark, cramped and almost pixelated. It was pretty hard to see a lot of it.

The blacks certainly weren't black watching on an OLED. I just wish someone streamed it 4K with HDR, would look waaaaay better!

Bloody good episode, finally something happened and it wasn't just talked about. But now two more boring episodes, followed by a kings landing battle by the looks of it.

Loved the Arya surprise at the end. You kind of forgot where she was after seeing her in the room with the Hound all scared and stuff, and then bamm!!!

No spoilers on this point, but I am interested who will finally get to kill Cersys. She certainly has no shortage of suitors for the role.

I am predicting with 3 more to go, next ep will be planning and talking and accounting for the dead, the 5th will be the battle with Cersys and the last will be a tie up of story threads, and the decision on who will sit on the Iron Throne.

my questions after the episode:

Where did Arya jump from? We know that she is quiet, and quick on her feet* but I thought they would have done something similar as Theon or stopped her before getting too close. It could be the arrogance of the Night King, like allowing Theon to get close and kill him.

Why didn't Theon pull out the dragon glass and stick just, the tip into the Night King if that all it took?

So many people died but main characters didn't, the scenes appeared too staged to make the main characters survive. Sam, those in the crypt also mostly survived, It didn't seem like GOT twist like in the past.

Also, fighting for the throne seemed so trivial compared to fighting the walkers, but this last episode seemed a let down.

*(when she met Jon in the Garden, and he didn't hear her come up behind him)

I had to turn up the brightness as soon as the episode started. we couldn't see a thing when Sam was walking about.

Like others I was quite conflicted about this episode.

The Arya ending I felt was too easy, too quick and made it feel like a quick wrap up to get onto the next plot set up, for me.

I also thought more favourites should have died...Sam for one - and the big red haired northerner. Maybe Brienne or Jamie...or Podrick, for a heart-wrencher.

Jon sat about like a lump too often, considering what he's been up to the last few years. I also expected him to be immune to the blue fire and be caught full-blast and survive like the Night King did with normal dragon fire. That would've been an unusual twist...we know Dany is immune to flames.

I left this episode feeling like it was epic and disappointing all at the same time.

Jon shouldn't be a candidate for the Iron Throne, he makes some unbelieveable/dumb decisions. Attacking the Night King, surely he thought that was a dumb idea? Deciding he is going to take on the dragon despite knowing he can't win, and many others just in that one episode.

I assumed Arya used her faceless abilities to disguise herself as a white walker and get close enough for the kill. Would have been cool to see that, like with Walder Frey.

Its actually disgusting that HBO doesn't broadcast GoT in 4k. 1080p doesn't do the show justice.

I agree about picture quality. I was watching on 65" old and the dark pixelated contrast arcs were really noticable.

Like others here, not enough of the characters were killed off. Character assassination is one of the real pluses of GOT.

Tyrion and Sansa ? She who started the series as the most superficial character only interested in pretty things and status, ends the program still married to the least pretty but most interesting character.

The more time passes the more disappointed I am at just the story. So much more could have happened with the Night King it just feels like a wrap up =(
