BlueShift: Because the Graphics Interchange Format should logically be pronounced with a soft 'g'?
<snort> Giraffics Interchange Format...
I've seen people argue that because the G stands for "graphics", and graphics has the non-J sound (I don''t know whether it's "soft" or "hard"), that GIF should therefore be pronounced with the non-J sound.
I can see the logic there, and can therefore conclude that those same people pronounce JPEG as "jay-feg", since the P stands for "photo".
Maybe that is why Jif changed the name of the product in Europe to Cif...!
(Note - it was not. I believe it was because Jif is hard to say for many Johnny Foreigners in Europe. Or else the company is run by the same Cylons who renamed Marathon as Snickers and Opal Fruits as Starburst.)

When I first arrived here I would order a "quah-saw" with a nasal n at the end ... blank faces - I can hear their thoughts ... he's stupid isn't he ... so i point ... oh croy-sonts! sure.
I've learnt not to order fillays and never point out coo dee sars.
It's hardest when someone has a french family name but sounds like a Kiwi. Bet they don't know how to pronounce their name properly ;p. So I just ask around or ask said persons.
Roo-Ter
The little things make the biggest difference.
I don't get it, what is the embarrassment except maybe between kids in a school yard. Is saying 'Root Beer', 'the plants root system', 'the root cause' somehow wrong or rude?
Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I have never once heard someone call them croy-sonts, except ironically. Pronunciation is not always so great but it's in the ballpark.
You can get a fillay (o' fish) at McDs! I think fillet != filet, but maybe that's just me.
Also, if my family name looks French, that's great, but I would think, by definition, I can't pronounce my family name "wrong". It's my family name. Maybe somewhere in my family's past, it was pronounced differently, but not anymore.

You try telling the attractive receptionist that there's a problem rooting her packets, see who turns red.

In all my years in IT (don't ask) I don't recall ever having to tell a receptionist that so I cannot comment really, you could text or email the update to her I guess ![]()

I once had a customer (Who I knew VERY well) who called me to tell me her rooter was broken, I told her she should see a Doctor about it, I wasn't qualified to help. She roared with laughter and is now very careful to refer to her "rowter"
Back in the days when I used to write standards documents, the convention was to use American spelling in code. An acronym is always pronounced letter by letter and is written in capitals (I was taught to imagine full-stops between each letter). FBI, JPG, GIF, SQL, WHO are examples. These are technically called Initialisms.
If the acronym forms a word like NASA, SCUBA, it is pronounced as a word, but still written in capitals. If it is a short form of a word (like caps for capitals) then it is written in lower case and pronounced as a word.
Software Engineer

Gender Neutral

...they/their/them...
