Troll Hunters: Rise of the Titans - Netflix Movies - 7.5/10. Based on the 3 companion separate ½ hr series (3Below, Wizards - Tales of Arcadia & Troll Hunters). For kids and adults alike>

The heroes from the Troll Hunters series team-up on an epic adventure to fight the Arcane Order for control over the magic that binds them all.

Jolt (Amazon Prime Video): long story short - main character has a physical/mental disorder which makes her strong, fast and violent, with a really short fuse and impulse control issues.

She uses a special device that gives her a jolt (hence the title) when she's feeling freaky and it calms her down.

She then goes on a violent rampage and the inevitable ending is quite predictable.

I actually quite enjoyed it for what it was. 6/10

Watched Chaos Walking on Sky Box Office in the weekend.

Tom Holland is a young dude on an Earth-like planet, where you can see/hear only men's thoughts. There are no women, which is somewhat mysterious. There were women, because he talks about his mother, but it appears they all died.

A woman from an Earth Colony ship appears out of nowhere and he discovers she has no "noise" (the thoughts that are out loud/visible) and this somewhat fascinates him and freaks him out.

The movie really gets going from that point.

It's a little predictable, a lot entertaining and well acted/shot. There are some genuinely funny parts and some quite sad bits.

I'd give it 8/10.

Free guy at the movies

This was supposed to come out as one of 2020's US summer blockbusters but obviously covid stopped that. The marketing campaign had already started and then put on hold.

They restarted the marketing campaign but couldn't show too much more of the movie footage so did some rather creative marketing, who's the smarter Canadian, Dude, etc... Check them out on YouTube some are quite funny if you like Ryan Reynolds humour.

As for the movie, it was fine, fun with a good cast. If you've seen the trailers you know what you're getting into. Nothing earth breaking but I can think of worse ways to spend a couple of hours so worth going to see.

Not sure if I like hearing a kiwi accent in a Hollywood movie though especially when it's the bad guy. Will this be a next big thing?

Some of the scenes in the trailers aren't in the movie as they used alternative cuts or dialogue which was a pleasant surprise.

Beckett (Netflix) 2/10

This popped up as the promoted trailer a couple of days ago and in a moment of weakness and boredom decided it was worth a shot...It wasn't.

Poor acting (sorry Denzel, your son didn't shine here), story line had some ridiculous and nonsensical parts, and the sound track (70's screeching sound effects mostly) just didn't fit, were distracting, and by the end was driving me nuts.  Don't get me started on that ending.

1 point for some different scenery and set locations, and 1 point for a very brief appearance by Alicia Vikander.

Recommendation:  Avoid

Free Guy - 8/10 (Cinema)

This was on my list of films to see that had been delayed by the pandemic, and I was keyed up to see it on Saturday.  As others have said it is a little predictable, but that doesn't detract from what is still an enjoyable film.  Ryan Reynolds is fast becoming one of those actors that people love or loathe, and fortunately I love him.  I enjoy his easy-going manner, his style of humour, and most of his films are fun to watch.  Free Guy is firmly in that wheelhouse, and is supported by good casting (Taika Waititi, Jodie Comer, and Joe Keery).  The influence of The Truman Show is evident, but it doesn't feel like a rehash.  The whole film is entertaining from start to finish, but there are some golden moments in the last act, especially when the Dude turned up, plus there are some fun cameos sprinkled towards the end.

The Public 9/10 (DVD)

This film came out a couple of years ago, and I missed out on seeing it in the theatre and finally got the chance to watch it at home last night.  It stars Emilio Estevez (who also wrote and directed), Taylor Schilling, Jena Malone, Alec Baldwin, Jeffrey Wright and Christian Slater, and is set in a public library in Cincinatti.  The premise is that the library is overrun by homeless people during a cold snap, and it turns into a "hostage" situation.  However, it's actually more of a demonstration/protest/occupation in response to homeless people suffering through the freezing temperatures and the city's inability to provide enough emergency shelter for the homeless.

It's a great film, especially in the authentic way that it portrays public libraries as sanctuaries for people who are poor, homeless, and those who have nowhere else to go.  As someone who has a partner that works in a public library, I can confirm that this is a very authentic portrayal of libraries here in Aotearoa New Zealand.  It also accurately captures the response of so many librarians, who daily draw on their reserves of empathy to respond to the needs of patrons regardless of background.  The film addresses issues of poverty, homelessness, community and comradeship, empathy, public responsibility, political leadership (or the lack thereof), and the relationship of authority to democracy.  However, it does it all with humanity and without sounding preachy.  The cast are all excellent, but Emilio Estevez stands out as a sympathetic character that recognises the challenges experienced by many who are homeless, and the limitations of his role as a public servant/librarian.

I think this film would work really well as a stage play.  The "action" is mostly confined to the library itself, and has a tight core cast with a large ensemble of supporting characters.  It also has a structure that would fit well into two or three acts.  It reminded me of movies like 12 Angry Men, or A Few Good Men (both of which I think either originated as a play, or were adapted for the stage), with a tight story confined to few locations.  The emphasis is on the human drama, and it plays out well through their interactions.

Well recommended if you can find it.

Just watched Grace: The Possession last night. Bit of an older movie, think it is from 2014 maybe.

I quite enjoyed the way it was filmed which is through the eyes of Grace herself, which is a bit of a different take on the handheld camera perspective. It had a few good moments throughout. If you're into horrors and haven't seen this it could be worth the watch 👻

Also just watched Aftermath. This is a newer movie just out on Netflix. It's about a young couple who are having relationship problems so they buy a house they get for a great deal but before long disturbing events start taking place. I thoroughly enjoyed, and won't reveal any spoilers on this one!

Since you seem to like horror, have you check out Shudder?

Misha and the Wolves (on Netflix)

Documentary /dramatisation of a story that I could only vaguely remember details of - from stories in the media over a decade ago, but I definitely knew the "spoiler".

A few negative critical reviews seem to focus on the fact that if you don't know the "spoiler" (maybe the reviewers didn't) - then you're potentially led down the garden path - if you want/expect a child's fairy-tale / documentary as entertainment - you probably won't like this.  Yet even Netflix's synopsis more or less  hands you the "spoiler".

The way this movie was presented showed how others were dragged in - and that was fascinating.

Good way to spend an hour and a half during lockdown.

Sicario 8/10 DVD

Denis Villeneuve directed Emily Blunt in this violent story about combating Mexican drug cartels. Villeneuve is a master at creating atmosphere (eg Blade Runner 2049, Arrival) and this move has it in spades.

I've watched it a few times and it's still very powerful.

You certainly wouldn't want Alejandro (Benecio Del Toro) on your case.

Kung Fu Hustle , Netflix , Subtitles.

Wow this is so much fun, funny as hell. To ease the lockdown tension.

You get real Kung Fu action, Some house of Flying Dragons like action, Cartoon Like stuff all melded into one.

With a bit of Heart , and Music score seemed to fit very well.

Its silly sure but its that type of movie that pokes fun at itself and the genre.

CODA - Apple TV - 9/10

Child of Deaf Adults, this was a surprise. The whole family enjoyed this one a lot. Very interesting to get an insight into how a child that can hear deals with deaf parents as well as the whole family pursuing their dreams. Very well directed and edited so you do get pulled into their world. Obviously a mix of voice and subtitles. The sign language is impressive and very funny.

Black Widow - Apple TV - 3/10

I thought this would be a lot better. Waste of money.

The Equilizer2 - 7/10 - Netflix

Robert McCall serves an unflinching justice for the exploited and oppressed, but how far will he go when that is someone he loves?

Not as good as the first and little bit samo-samo.
