SepticSceptic:

It;s so strange  - you crawl to the approach, crawl through the tunnel, and pop out at the northern end, and then the traffic speeds up to at least the speed limit ...

I'd suggest it's the confined space gives the impression of being closer together. Also an accident in a tunnel is a much less pleasant thing and has a much larger in impact on traffic flow. I'd consider it normal for people to be more cautious. I don't personally feel too worried about it, but I know less confident drivers feel more apprehensive.

If I haven't been through a tunnel before, I am more cautious.

I suspect it isn't dissimilar to the issue where drivers 'speed up' when they get to a passing lane.

I think most of that is caused by the fact that the road is usually a road that indicates cautious driving...until you get to the straight bit where the passing lane has inevitably been sited. Thus, freed from the need to concentrate on the steep/windy/otherwise hazardous road, the drivers subconsciously accelerate.

Of course, there are some ******* who do it just to annoy, but I think the above explanation covers most instances.

Fleas. They don't annoy me so much, but I get annoyed on behalf of my cats. There seem to be a lot of fleas around this year.

Comfortis. It just works. The spot-on treatments like Advantage are just hopeless.

When we bought the house, 12 years ago, there was a cat here. It moved away with previous owners, but not without leaving a flea infestation. Two applications of neem oil on the floors and they disappeared. We got a dog six years ago and she never had fleas. WE use spot on treatment, once a month. It just works for us.

We have 3 dogs and no cats. We have had at least one dog for 11 years and usually more. Not once have any of them got fleas, despite sharing their domain with sheep, horses, alpacas, rats, mice, rabbits, hares, possums, hedgehogs and poultry over the years. We used to use Frontline but now use Bravecto, which the dogs eat and it lasts 3 months each time.

Why is anyone surprised when Windows does this kind of thing? You just sigh and move on.

I give the cat two of the Comfortis pills a year, at most. She's a domestic long hair and is outdoors quite a bit.

When a US company inexplicably sells to NZ using Euros instead of dollars (and, of course, charges a little more for the privilege).

Meanwhile, Google quality control seems to be nonexistent these days.

  • I have annotations disabled in YouTube but since yesterday I've seen them pop up regardless
  • The option to sort comments by date posted does absolutely nothing
  • When doing an image search in Google, the "Visit page" button has started going to pages that don't even contain the image
  • The iOS Hangouts app has had a bug for months (which I reported to them at the time) where the option to open a link in Safari... doesn't.

People who can't get common figures of speech correct.

For example this from the Herald

"Cyclone Gita is honing in on New Zealand"

No. It isn't. It's homing in. Like in the pigeons.

Ditto "I could care less" instead of the correct "I couldn't care less" and so forth.

I don't recall the actual sentences, but yesterday I saw two sentences in a row that both used the same word. Well, they should've used the same word, but the first sentence used "they're" and the second used the correct "their". They were literally right next to each other but one of them was wrong and the other was right...

"I could care less" gets the point across quite well, IMO.

I had a flatmate once who believe motorway on-ramps have a speed limit of 80kmh, even in a 100kmh zone. Even when the sign on the on-ramp says 100kmh.

Are there a lot of people that think this? Because I seem to get stuck behind a lot of them.

No, it does not.

The phrase "I couldn't care less" is used to mean literally what it says - it would not be possible for me to care less about whatever it is.

The phrase "I could care less" does not get that point across, is incorrect vernacular and is just plain nonsense when used in place of the correct phrase.

They're slang, not "child" words.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

So, I bought a laptop for my son from Harvey norman today.

The store rep was pushing the extended warranty, did not mention the CGA at all. When I asked about added protection over and above the CGA he said harvey norman will deny any CGA claim outside the standard product warranty and I would be required to take them to the disputes tribunal -- this takes much longer so I am better off with the $250 extended warranty.

I would have walked out if it wasn't such a good deal.

Really annoying....

I *strongly* suggest you contact HN head office about this. That is deliberately misleading and if I am not incorrect, this is cause for them to fall foul of the commerce commision (With large fines a potential consequence).

I have just had a similar thing with another retailer I am having an appliance issue with and when I reported what the store manager told me, they were on the phone within 5 minutes in a panic to reassure me they would immediately pull said manager off the floor and retrain them.
