I *strongly* suggest you contact HN head office about this. That is deliberately misleading and if I am not incorrect, this is cause for them to fall foul of the commerce commision (With large fines a potential consequence).

I have just had a similar thing with another retailer I am having an appliance issue with and when I reported what the store manager told me, they were on the phone within 5 minutes in a panic to reassure me they would immediately pull said manager off the floor and retrain them.

I was amazed at the cheek of the guy... but, I don't want to get him into trouble... he probably doesn't get paid much and apart from this one thing he was reasonably pleasant.

But don't HN have the right to the view that a products reasonable lifespan is equivalent to the guarantee? That is their opinion only, and if you disagree you use the disputes tribunal. The CGA is a really quite vague on expected lifespans.

With respect to 'large fines' from the commerce commission --- the CC have never fined a major retailer for CGA breaches on consumer electronics (to my knowledge). I have laid complaints in the past, and received a letter saying blah blah blah sounds like you are right but on this occasion we will not take it further.

Actively misleading customers is something they are really cracking down on and yes I believe they have handed out some huge fines to Telcos for doing it. Other retailers as well.

Whilst you don't want to get him in trouble, raising it should result in retraining, preventing the same thing from happening to someone else in the future.

Yeah it's a pain the CGA doesn't specify expected lifespans. I guess it's understandable given the range of types of items covered, and even for a particular item, say a fridge/freezer combo, it's reasonable to expect the $16000 Miele should last a lot longer than the $300 Parmco.

I've encouraged Consumer NZ to publish tables that specify these expected lifespans, but to no avail AFAIK, probably because it's a huge task.

SepticSceptic:

The obnoxoius weed named wandering jew (Tradescantia fluminensis ).

This has an amazing reslience to most forms of herbicide ( and hydrocarbon)  control.

In preparation to planting a new lawn, a fair portion was covered with this thrice damned weed. Most other weeds succumbed to a couple of passes of glyphosate.

Not this stuff - I trried double strength glyphosate, I have tried Weed Weapon ( glyphosate with Saflufenacil ). I have even tried the scorched earth approach and sprayed upcoming shoots with petrol !!!! Everything curled up and died !!! You would have thought wandering jew would follow suit. ?

Nah, a few days later, more green shoots popping up.

Damned. Stuff. Just. Doesn't. Die !!!!

Looks like I'm gonna have to carefully scrape out the vine from wherever it is buried, and bin it in a bucket of petrol.

Grrr...

@SepticSceptic Use woody weed killer instead. (mixture of 2,4,D and Dicamba) It is a selective broadleaf weed killer. Meaning it will kill things line wandering dew and morning glory vine. But wont kill most grasses. Have successfully used it to spray morning glory vine that was getting through my lawn, with only minimal damage to the grasses.

Then there is also Amitrole. Which is strong enough to kill bamboo. And is also a "kill everything" type of herbicide.

Use a penetrant with the above weed killers when spraying the wandering dew and anything else with waxy type leaves.

I find glyphospate to be pretty much a waste of time.

Thanks Aredwood - will look at those options.

I also think I have some morning glory ( or something similar) sneaking thru the fence from the neighbours. If it is the same one I am thinking of, it develops a thick root tuber that enables it to survive a winter,  manual weeding and a spray of glyphosate. I have been pouring undilute glyphosate in to a small pill bottle, snip off the end of the creeper, and attach a rubberband to the vine ( many half-hitch loops), and then loop the rubberband around the bottom of the pill bottle, in such a way that the cut end of the vine is permanently immersed in the glyphosate. Leave for 2 weeks.

Last year, I had over a dozen sneaky vines coming thru the fence.

This year, 2.

I see it as ideal otherwise it'd just become another blanket "It's out of warranty (CGA) now" opportunity for retailers/distributors/manufacturers. As it stands they have to consider the cost and realistic expectations for the lifespan of goods.

Lately TV commercials seem to be filled with victims of some strange disease. Everywhere they are twitching and jerking around. It seems to have started with Air New Zealand. Then it began to spread, like some horrible zombie infection. Most recently it has appeared on commercials for VTNZ. Wearing stupid grimaces, the employees all jerk and bob around on the screen. Oh wait, they are dancing. At least, I think that is what it is. Are they dancing with joy at the prospect of inspecting yet another vehicle? What about those Air New Zealand dummies? Maybe they are experiencing an earthquake? Or the plane is about to crash? It is difficult to tell with them all grinning so hard. Maybe they should just fly the plane instead.

I have no idea what jigging mannequins have to do with flying planes or serving supermarket customers or inspecting vehicles, but I find these moronic ads very annoying indeed. It is like they have run out of ideas, or budget, or advertising agencies. Or maybe, having dumbed everything down to IQ 0, they are now moving into negative territory. Whatever, watching a group of grinning imbeciles performing a St. Vitus dance does not make me want to do business with the company concerned under any circumstances. It just annoys me.

Inevitably someone will always find something offensive. Obviously my comment is not directed at genuine victims of Huntington's Disease.

Ads that last longer than the content they are preventing you from watching.

Stuff I am looking at you with your 30 seconds ad for a 15 second video.
