I *strongly* suggest you contact HN head office about this. That is deliberately misleading and if I am not incorrect, this is cause for them to fall foul of the commerce commision (With large fines a potential consequence).
I have just had a similar thing with another retailer I am having an appliance issue with and when I reported what the store manager told me, they were on the phone within 5 minutes in a panic to reassure me they would immediately pull said manager off the floor and retrain them.
I was amazed at the cheek of the guy... but, I don't want to get him into trouble... he probably doesn't get paid much and apart from this one thing he was reasonably pleasant.
But don't HN have the right to the view that a products reasonable lifespan is equivalent to the guarantee? That is their opinion only, and if you disagree you use the disputes tribunal. The CGA is a really quite vague on expected lifespans.
With respect to 'large fines' from the commerce commission --- the CC have never fined a major retailer for CGA breaches on consumer electronics (to my knowledge). I have laid complaints in the past, and received a letter saying blah blah blah sounds like you are right but on this occasion we will not take it further.
