ARMY OF THIEVES (2021) 7/10 Netflix

Sebastian leads a quiet life as a bank teller, he also has a passion for breaking into safes, though only in practice, and has a You Tube channel on the subject of safecracking. He is invited to join a heist crew consisting of skilled jewel thief Gwendoline, expert hacker Korina, getaway driver Rolph and gunman Brad Cage to break into three banks in Paris, Prague and St Moritz, that have the three safes created by legendary locksmith Hans Wagner. The safes are due to be decommissioned in less than a week, so time is running out for someone to break into them.

I enjoyed this Netflix Original much more than I thought I would. The gorgeous Nathalie Emmanuel (whom I first saw in the Fast & Furious series) helped to keep my eyes glued to the screen.

This is a comedic heist film, with a touch of romance, and I was surprised to find that it is the prequel to ARMY OF THE DEAD, a Zombie Apocalypse film that I watched on Netflix last year. I recommend that anyone who hasn't seen either film, should watch ARMY OF THIEVES  first, as it connects nicely with the Zombie film.

Army of the Dead should be watched first, not the other way around, IMO.

Nope. None of the new family members have surnames in either the credits or on IMDB. When they met Janine Melnitz, they deliberately avoided names, instead saying something like "We're the... this is my father's place". There were other opportunities to inject this into the backstory, such as when the landlord arrived at the door, meeting Mr Grooberson (credited only as Grooberson), filling out the job application etc.

I can only assume they were being deliberately vague about the whole thing, and this certainly tainted my views on Ramis' character, not knowing the situation he left. Was he a parent by genes only, did he abandon a wife and kids?

The fans have filled in the blanks for us... https://absolutehorror.fandom.com/wiki/Callie_Spengler How much of this is correct is up for debate as there doesn't seem to be any references to support any of these facts.

OT: not unlike the time in Nov/Dec 1985 when there were three singles by different artists in the NZ Top 40 Charts all called "The Power Of Love"

Virtual chocolate fish for the first one to name the three singers/bands.  (NB: Frankie Goes To Hollywood wasn't one of them, their one charted  in Feb of that year.)

YEP - Thoroughly enjoyed this. Plus they have left it open for a sequel. I hope this movie encourages todays generation to watch the first series of movies, though they may cringe at the then CGI/special effects. They were cutting edge at the time.

Matrix Resurrections - 5/10 (Event Cinemas)

Like many people, I'm sure, the original Matrix was a watershed cinematic moment for me.  I saw it in my early 20s, and I count it as one of those films that I distinctly remember where I was when I watched it (Westgate Cinemas) and how it made me feel (mindblown).  I remember driving home from the cinema talking non-stop with my friend about the ideas, the VFX, the story, the music, and when I got home I raved to my dad about this film that felt like a seachange in movie making.  I can't think of another film that I have seen in the theatre which has had the same impact, or which was so obviously an historical moment.

While the sequels that followed years later were something of a letdown, I mostly enjoyed them.  So I did my best to not read too much about Resurrections before I went to see it (that was the other thing about the original Matrix film - it came out at a time when the web was still fairly nascent for the majority of the population, and being spoiled for a film was something confined to dedicated cinephiles.  I don't even remember seeing a trailer for the Matrix - my mate and I just decided to see it one night).

I walked out of the cinema after seeing Resurrections unsure how I felt about it.  It's taken me a few days to compose my thoughts, and even still I'm not really sure.  Firstly - it's way too long.  It felt indulgent to have the film run to about 2.5 hours, when there was barely 30 mins of an idea there.  The first hour drags on, and I think it could have been tightened up hugely.  Secondly, it feels like a mess.  There are too many characters included for no good reason.  There are the core cast - Neo, Trinity, Morpheus, Smith, with new characters Bugs and the Analyst.  But surrounding them are a supporting cast of mostly anonymous and interchangeable extras.  I couldn't name a single one of them.  Comparisons with the original film are always going to be unfair, but the film invites those comparisons by tying this story so closely to the first film.  And part of what made the first film so great was its tight cast - again, Neo, Trinity and Morpheus form the core, but Cypher, Switch, Dozer, Mouse and others are memorable and have a genuine part to play.  I'm sure that's not because I've watched the original countless times, but because the cast was focussed and deliberate, rather than adding in more and more people for the sake of fleshing out a threadbare story.

Thirdly, the story is weak.  It latches on to the end of the story of the first trilogy, but there is very little substance or driving motivation for why events have happened as they happened.  I don't want to give away any spoilers, so I won't mention specific characters, but I spent a lot of time scratching my head, but not in a good way.  Rather than contemplating the meaning of reality, the duality of identity, or any of the other cool philosophical concepts from the original film, I was simplying trying to work out why Neo was back (and the answer, when it arrived, was far from satisfying).

Fourthly, one of the key characters from the original film is completely ignored in Resurrections - the style.  While everyone was probably hoping for some new cinematic innovation like bullet-time to be present in this film (I knew it wouldn't even try), what I was hoping for was a film that would present a distinctive style.  In the original film, both the costuming and the soundtrack, along with the cinematography, gave it a unique presentation that (for me at least) takes your breath away.  I loved the look of each of the characters - the long jackets, the sunglasses, the phones, the green hues, and the kicking soundtrack (from Propellerheads through to RATM).  But in Resurrections there is nothing.  Some half-hearted attempt is made to create an iconic look for Bugs with her sunglasses, but everything else just feels perfunctory and instantly forgettable.

To sum up, I was pretty disappointed.  I tried to mitigate that by not getting my hopes up, having modest expectations, and trying not to go in with preconceived notions.  As I already mentioned, it's unfair to compare this film to the original, but I don't think it's possible to completely avoid those comparions - especially when the film is basically mining those memories as part of the story.  In that regard, it completely fails to measure up.  But even if I do just treat it as its own story, it still feels very blah.  I read somewhere that this was less of a story about the Matrix and more about Lana Wachowski's story.  I know a little about her journey (but not a lot), and even deliberately watching it for the queer text and messaging, it still feels very confused.  My ex-wife, who is gay and non-binary, felt similarly that this wasn't a coherent story.  There's a line early in the first act where someone talks about Thomas Anderson - the in-movie creator of the Matrix game - being forced to make a sequel by Warner Bros, or else lose all creative control.  This felt like a very on-the-nose comment about why Lana made this movie.  It doesn't add anything to the existing story, so maybe it's just about the money.  Sad.

For those that are curious, there is a post-credit scene right at the very end, but it's completely pointless and not worth sitting through to the end to watch.  Do the cinema workers a favour, and leave once the credits roll.

Not gonna read all your post until I've seen the movie but that was the same for me.  A mate took me along to it after hearing nearly nothing of it and the the movie sucked me in like an addict with a joint.  It was very uncanny how it felt like the movie was somehow about me.

Sequels generally never live up to that first experience.  Much like how that addict never gets the same hit again I guess.

If you're looking for a similar experience again of coming out of a movie not looking at the world quite the same again, try strapping yourself in and watching the movie Pi.  Epic soundtrack also.

THE LAST DUEL (2021) 8/10 [iTunes Rental]

In 14th century France, Norman knight Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon) accuses squire Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver) of raping his wife Marguerite (Jodie Comer). When Jacques denies the accusation, many doubt Marguerite's version of the events, leaving her reputation in tatters. Against Marguerite's wishes, Jean decides to challenge Jacques to a duel to the death, even though he knows that if he loses, it will condemn his wife to a terrible end.

What a great pity that this film bombed at the Box Office. I really enjoyed it. The cast was excellent, and I think that Jodie Comer should be nominated for an Oscar, for her performance as Marguerite.

Ridley Scott is always looking for something new in his films, and I particularly liked the way that the film was split into three parts, to let us view each of the three main characters tell their story of what happened, but, which one was telling the truth?
