Edge of Darkness 2010 - 8/10 - Sky Movies

As homicide detective Thomas Craven (Mel Gibson) investigates the murder of his activist daughter, he uncovers a corporate cover-up and government conspiracy that attracts an agent tasked with cleaning up the evidence.

A little similar to No Way Out 1987 - 7/10 - but better and more corporate involvement. Ray Winstone is excellent.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Eternals 1/10

That’s 2 1/2 hours of my life I’ll never get back. Truly faecal.

The wheels are coming off on the MCU. Only one of the phase 4 movies (Shan Chi) has been entertaining. I don’t expect great drama or high art from marvel but I do expect to find something entertaining to watch.

Find the original Edge of Darkness BBC series. Will no doubt be "slower" compared to the movie but I still think it is brilliant.

Starred the excellent Bob Peck and Joe Don Baker and was part written by Martin Campbell who I think might be the Bond director.

Encanto - watched with the kids. Decent sort of movie, not scary for the more sensitive ones, other than a bit of suspense. The kids loved it, I'd give it a 7 I guess.

My kids are starting to ask to watch non-animated movies now which is interesting. We watched some of the Xmas movies including the most recent home alone with some cool cameos and references to earlier movies.

Dark Waters - 7/10. Has quite a few well known actors and is based on true events over a ~25+ year period - and quite revealing about evil corporate America!

If you're a bit anti-government / corporates in general then this is a must watch. No nudity or anything like that so safe to watch with the family, maybe not for young kids though.

Watched Dune online over the weekend (legally):

It's a well filmed and acted movie and although it's LOOOONG, it never feels under-paced or dreary.

I enjoyed it and it's very obviously part one of a multi-film franchise, but it's a good enough stand-alone movie.

You do need to concentrate though. A lot going on in the political arena. Just like it should be.

8/10 from me

Chaos walking. Sound was a problem not sure If it was just the TV I watched it on but made the concept of the movie difficult to follow. Interesting concept but pretty average.. 6.5

Watched this over the weekend. Like you, I thought the concept was interesting and acting/production was good but overall meh.

I did look up on the book trilogy this was based on - quite different to the movie.

Don't Look Up - Netflix NZ

I actually really enjoyed this. My wife, less so, but the stellar cast and sense of irony throughout was great. 7/10

Mortal Kombat - Apple iTunes NZ

Recommended to me by my teenagers and as it was a 99c rental, I thought, "Why Not?".

I'll tell you why not...because it's rubbish. CGI was OK. Aussie guy playing Kano was quite funny, although was every stereotype of an Aussie bloke you could ever want.

3/10 I look forward to missing the sequel

If youve not read the books, will it still make sense & still be a 8/10 ?

With the original film way back, it made more sense after a Dune Book fan filled in the gaps for me .

I'm not a Herbert megafan, so wasn't all that overly-familiar with the politics, but it was still a good watch and I knew what was going on at the end...

THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS (2021) 7/10: Much better than I was expecting. You need to concentrate though. Lots going on. I had to rewind at one point to reconnect to the story.

To find out if his reality is a physical or mental construct, Mr. Anderson, aka Neo, will have to choose to follow the white rabbit once more. If he's learned anything, it's that choice, while an illusion, is still the only way out of -- or into -- the Matrix. Neo already knows what he has to do, but what he doesn't yet know is that the Matrix is stronger, more secure and far more dangerous than ever before.

THE TINDER SWINDLER (2022) 7/10: Documentary about Simon Leviev an Israeli scumbag, who funded his lavish lifestyle by conning women he met on Tinder.

A group of women who were the victims of a dating app based swindler join together in an attempt to hunt him down and recover the millions of dollars that were stolen from them.

RAMS (2020) 6/10: A mildly entertaining film.

Two estranged brothers must set aside their differences when a rare and lethal illness threatens their respective flocks of sheep in Western Australia.

DON'T BREATHE 2 (2021) 7/10: Although not as good as the first film, this sequel is one for the gore fans out there. Lots of hacking, stabbing, slashing.....need I go on.

Blind veteran Norman Nordstrom has been hiding out for several years in an isolated cabin. He lives with a young girl and has recreated the family stolen from him by a drunken driver. Their quiet life together is soon shattered when a group of unseemly criminals kidnaps her. Norman is now forced to tap into even darker and more creative instincts in an effort to save her.

There can be only one: Highlander is a classic film from the 80s - a box office flop which became a cult classic.

I watched it again today to see how it's dated. I nearly didn't get past the first fight scene and certainly didn't bother getting my son to join me in watching it (I don't think he wouldn't have tolerated it!) However I stayed the distance and relived the mythology of the immortals. The Scottish flashbacks were great and in particular Sean Connery's character; I did find Christopher Lambert annoying - probably because he couldn't speak English (!)

In summary, it was totally cheesy and cliched - almost unwatchable until it got going when I could overlook its negatives - the effects are dated, particularly the finale (as to be expected), but the soundtrack and mythology are still great. I can't decide how to score it!
