We once had a blackbird in the yard who was obsessed with the window in our back door. He would spend the whole day flying at it and pecking it. That used to drive me crazy. I tried to trap him but he was always too fast. I finally covered the window with a screen to block the reflection. The blackbird decided he had won and went away.

It starts of small - a bit of bling there, a nice new shiny bit there, some new upholstery, a bit of outboard repair ( impellers, props), and then

*** BANG ***

it's an insatiable money pit. It's like having children, no matter how much money you pour into it, you'll never get a return on investment ..

But what price can you put on fun, aye !!

My boat has made me smile for 20 years. It cost me less than most people spend on a bathroom upgrade, we've holidayed on it average 4 weeks a year, it costs me about $1k a year in maintenance, insurance etc, and if it was only worth $0.00 now, it's been remarkable value. Better than boring cars.

The thing that usually kills the joy of boat ownership is "ETBGOIG" (either this boat goes or I'm going). That's the result of taking the family out for a "nice cruise" because the sun is shining, having no idea of boatmanship, not looking at a weather forecast, not having the DIY skills to fix things which inevitably break, and when it all turns to custard and you've scared your family, promising that it'll be better next time - but it won't be because you didn't learn the first time.

Mine has cost me fuel... Gave it a birthday last weekend and then took the Mrs and the dogs out.

Over here you need a boat licence, so most people know what they're doing, and the DIY bit for me is easy... I started building engines when I was 9 and now fabricate and assemble fire trucks. Even going to do another trade next year for some more paperwork and enhance some skills I already have a bit of.

Our boats did not cost a lot a year. A Sky subscription cost more and that is way less fun than messing around in boats.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

HAHAHA... this thing doesn't have upholstery or shiny bits, it's ex-army (boat is a fibreglass Savage 14ft) and the Johnson 40 is also ex-army, and has a new impeller...

This thing is as basic as it comes. Plus see above post. This won't be going near a boat shop or mechanic.

Oh,I did spend $10 on new steering cable. And fabricated a new joint out of stainless steel at work. woohoo!

I love old gear. I understand how it works (unlike modern stuff). I needed to check some very old laptop drives. How to do that? Fired up spare ancient desktop, found adaptor in old drive drawer, plugged drives into IDE connectors, tried to boot, of course they wouldn't. So I found old Win 7 DVD, booted from that, started installation, went to repair, found command line function, started that, formatted drives, everything sweet. Made me smile.

I am not a performance freak. I don’t obsess over audio perfection, superior computing power or tetrapixel video resolution. Things I find acceptable drive purists to distraction.

But I do have limits. I expect a minimum standard of behaviour from my devices. For years I have been perfectly happy with my pc sound quality, achieved by picking up the HDMI audio from the Veon TV I use as a monitor and sending it to an antique A&R amp feeding a couple of shelf speakers I picked up from a garage sale for $3. Compared to the native sound from the Veon, this was literally music to my ears.

But after many years of faithful service, the speakers deteriorated beyond the point even I found acceptable. So I replaced them with a $24 pair from a second-hand shop. The new speakers were fine. In fact, they were so good that I started noticing a really annoying low-level hum, on the threshold of hearing, that didn’t get through the earlier speakers.

After putting up with it for a few days, I decided that it really would gradually drive me crazy so I pulled everything apart and started trying to track it down. I replaced cables. I shortened them. I tried different inputs. I did everything I could think of but I couldn’t get rid of the damned hum. Then I remembered how I had fixed a similar problem with the audio set-up in the lounge. As a final act of desperation, I ran a ground wire between the TV chassis and the earth terminal on the amp. No more hum.

It is funny the different things that make you smile.
