freitasm: "Touched them up" - dreadful words.

I know someone who takes lots of photos, then resizes then down (and cropping in the process, therefore losing the correct ratio). I always ask for "the originals please".

My wife is a click fanatic, she takes 100's of photos then asks me to sort them out. On a recent trip to China she took around 900 photos in 6 days, it was a task and a half to sort them and fix them

It seems that the blurred bars are hiding additional imagery. It looks as if the person filming correctly held their phone in landscape mode, but TVNZ wanted to emphasise that this is from a mobile phone by adding the blurred filter to make it LOOK like it was filmed in portrait !

Actually, last night's news had at least 3 items where the sides appeared to have been blurred on purpose ... it was obvious that the scene and colours etc were definitely part of the original film/video.

Ughhhh.

While on the subject of news, it would be good if TV news could tone down the over use of superlatives.

EG:
- Government makes an announcement.
- 1 minute later there is a tv reporter standing outside claiming that the "Public are outraged".... really, did they like ask the cameraman or something??

Sorry but no. The processing looks at the original portrait view and then tries to create something that looks as though it might be part of the original. A simple way to do that is to stretch the image sideways and then apply an assortment of blurring filters and then use that as the background with the original portrait image placed over the top of it. There are tutorial videos on youtube that show you how to achieve this with consumer grade software.

I've had a good look at many of these in the past and would agree with this - it looks like they have made a decision to make the sides look like they are being deliberately blurred to put the focus on the subject matter, when in fact they are actually just filling with blurred/stretched copies of the original video.

Yeah, they have, the citizen filmed stuff is now at a much higer resolution than the trash they output for broadcast television now.

But still they seem to have to grab the 360p off youtube and make it look worse when they put youtube found videos onto their own website., otherwise it would look better than what they broadcast most of the time.
