The St John Ambulance one currently playing on TV particularly grates me though. Surely I'm not the only one who can't understand a word that the little boy is saying?

No - you’re not the only one. I tend to hate adds with shouty kids in them. There’s another one currently running with a heap of kids - something to do with electric cars or petrol or whatever (I honestly don’t know) but I detest it.

People who refer to a switch/router/AP as a "modem"

I wonder how long it will be between xDSL finally being phased out people finally stopping calling anything that connects to the internet as a "modem"?

Hint: if you have fibre, you don't need a modem. If you have 4G, you don't need a modem

At a guess, decades. Consider that virtually nobody needs to monitor low-level system I/O on a computer these days, yet computer displays are still regularly referred to as "monitors".

... and a broadcast radio receiver is referred to as a ‘wireless’. And a small, portable wireless is referred to as a ‘transistor’.

First time I've heard those terms used in ages. Very rarely used these days except outside of retirement homes I would think.

The freaking vegans in my family are now pushing kombucha at me.

There is no way that vile random bacterial/fungal floating scum juice will ever pass my lips. Not a drop.

If garbage like that had therapeutic benefit, how come they're all pale, spotty, obese, and completely unhappily obsessive about their freaking health? They all look like they need a chop to chew on - an idea I'd never force on them.

/rant over.

The small thing which annoys me is that you can't tell family they're morons, by return of email sent with link to youtube home kombucha instructions, on social media, or directly to their faces.

Modem, basically-

Modem, short for 'Modulator/Demodulator'.

It converts an analog signal from a (copper) telephone line to a digital signal for the computer, and digital back to analog again, for the return journey.

If there's no analog involved, there's no modulation/demodulation, so you don't use a modem.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

So you think a trans-impedance amplifier is a pure digital component? Light itself is analog and any digital signal will look quite analog after it's way with reflections, dents and bends of the fibre, etc. and ... guess what ... it's modulated and multiplexed. So you have to demodulate it. I guess that is what Mo/Dem tries to tell you ... isn't it?

So, if anything, the ONT could be called a modem. But definitely not the router that connects to it.

Not quite as bad as people who refer to a PC as a "CPU", as in "my password is written on a sticky note stuck to the CPU under my desk"

I've heard people call their desk top computer a "hard drive" ! Several times!
