Made worse by the narrow aisles so many supermarkets seem to prefer here - some of the nearest ones to us are actually difficult to pass two abreast in without paying careful attention.

I knew a guy, who if he came across an "abandoned" trolley in his way, he would put random products in it!

If it was in the right isle he would put embarrassing ones in it.

Ahhh... thought you were referring to the TV ads, where it now costs you a few dollars to test their product. Surely that can't be legal? I thought that you had to get a full refund if you returned a bought-via-TV product within a month?

Those ads are so annoying! "Trial our treadmill in the comfort of your own home for only $4.99 (plus $49 S+H)"

The keyword here is "trial". If you like it and want to subsequently buy the product then that'll be an extra $500 which they don't mention in the ad.

Are you thinking of the color of the magic smoke that comes out if you connect them incorrectly.

I don't know offhand if early FDRs were ever actually black or not, but my understanding of the term from a childhood interest in electronics is that it was used to describe devices that did something, but had hidden inner workings so it was not immediately apparent how they did it. Before transistors and chips, electronic devices were built from discrete components that could easily be identified and described. This was no longer possible with integrated circuits. Instead, there was just a single component with input and output pins. You could input something and get something else out, but it was impossible to see how the input was being processed. It was like magic, a 'black box'.

Dude at the gym, who walks away from the bench press leaving all the weights on it. See this fairly often and I curse them for it..... He hasn't left anything behind so assume he has left it for good.

So, I remove all his little weights, and load up for my workout.

Get through a set, and he returns!! WTF??? He said he just went for water, i told him he should have left a towel or drink behind as it looked like he had finished.

So, I ask how much longer he has, he says around 30 minutes...that is a heck of a long time and the gym is really busy . So, whatever, it stuffs my routine a bit but I'll live.

I watch him, and he has actually reserved about 3 machines and he is doing a mini circuit, reserving every machine for his sole use and chasing people off if they try to use one. There are some utterly rude people at gyms!

It really bugs me how people think they can "reserve" gym machines while they use other equipment, especially when there are barely enough machines for one each. To me, you're either on it or off it, couldn't give a monkey's where you've left your towel/phone/bottle

I think most at least have a policy against it. If they say 30 min and are doing circuits and it's the only equipment of that type available, politely ask if you can work in, and if not speak to gym manager about it...

EDIT: And if they haven't left anything to indicate they're still busy with equipment, I have not problem taking over the equipment and if they come back I just tend to say "Oh I thought you were finished. You can work in if you want."

I used to like Sylvia Park. Unlike the majority of men I know, I quite like shopping, but traffic in that area, and parking, means that now I'll do almost anything to avoid going there. 12pm on Friday now looks like 12pm on Boxing day. Hideous.

Truly. A term which used to be reserved for the death of Heads of State or invasion of foreign powers is now used to announce things that are so banal and pointless that the word 'news' does not even apply, never mind the urgency of "Breaking News".

Unless they have changed, they record magnetically the last few minutes on spools of wire, I think.

I would hope they would just have massive SSDs and record literally everything for the entire flight by now but perhaps the SSDs can't be cased to ensure adequate survivability or something.

From wikipedia:

The earliest CVRs used analog wire recording, later replaced by analog magnetic tape. Some of the tape units used two reels, with the tape automatically reversing at each end. The original was the ARL Flight Memory Unit produced in 1957 by Australian David Warren and an instrument maker named Tych Mirfield.

Other units used a single reel, with the tape spliced into a continuous loop, much as in an 8-track cartridge. The tape would circulate and old audio information would be overwritten every 30 minutes. Recovery of sound from magnetic tape often proves difficult if the recorder is recovered from water and its housing has been breached. Thus, the latest designs employ solid-state memory and use digital recording techniques, making them much more resistant to shock, vibration and moisture. With the reduced power requirements of solid-state recorders, it is now practical to incorporate a battery in the units, so that recording can continue until flight termination, even if the aircraft electrical system fails.

They have changed. Modern FDRs are solid state digital.
