Yes, there are many options, ranging from software you install, to firewalls that subscribe to filter lists, to using specific DNS servers, all the way through to ISPs that offer this filtering as a value add service for the people that want to add this extra capability...

I don't think choosing some sort of automated filtering is wrong - I think it's wrong to force it on everyone, knowing what a huge impact it will have on unrelated sites.

If you're unintentionally "stumbling upon" porn every day, you may want to either check your PC for malware, or revise your browsing habits... but let's not derail the thread too far down the path of popups and browser security ;)



Haha this is entirely too true. I have no idea how people 'stumble' onto porn. I have Google Safe-search on and never run into porn unintentionally. 


I have an example for you.  Let's say you are interested in Ski racing in NZ so you type in "Black on white" because that is the name of an organisation supporting the sport.

While I haven't done this recently innocent phrases like this can result in all sorts of pornography appearing.  :)

Aside from which, who do you think is going to be paying to implement and manage this blocking?  One way or another, it'll be Internet users who pay.  Whether they want it or not.

Just tried your example search string and found nothing pornographically-related on the first 11 pages of results (at which point I got bored and looked no further). I am using Google. Are you guys that are having this 'stumbling' issue perhaps using some porn-oriented search engine instead?

I have to say I am mightily surprised by some of the attitudes in here.

Filtering Porn on the internet will do next to NOTHING to "save the children", "protect innocence" etc etc etc.

At worst it is a conceited attempt to pass more stringent surveillance and reporting (how long before the fact you opted in is brought up in court and you're labelled a pervert). Who maintains these lists? Who has access to the lists? Are they tied to a name or an account?

At best it is an incredibly naive view of how the world and the internet works.

The really harmful stuff - hate speech, bullying, facebook stalking and grooming will be totally unaffected.

I really fail to understand this dread of porn. Viewing it is not going to turn your child into a pervert or axe murderer.

As to it being like a drug? Please. People who are "addicted" to porn are just as likely to be addicted to food, or drink or drugs.

what about if you are searching a site about large chickens who get beauty treatments and innocently type in 'massive cocks and facial'?   :p

Im really actually quiet surprised that everyones attitude is that this filtering should be done and managed ourselves. It works at home!!!??!! Plenty of software packages that I can buy to achieve this. Thirdparty services that I can subscribe to.

Then they go on to say that if the same filtering is done by the ISP's it wont work ...It cant work, it will slow things down etc etc etc....

Whats the difference? We just moving the filters, along with the management of them, from the home (or the third party) to the ISP.

I see no reason why this cant work.

that logic does not follow. 


Why not? Actually all we are doing is moving the filters and the management of them further along the pipe.

There are niche providers to cater for those people that do.

Ah-HA! Thank you! The missing piece. If I combine your search string with the original example, then you start to get some slightly less scrupulous results. So, to those with issues, just don't add Mantis' string to the end of your search and you should be OK.

So can somebody please tell me whats the difference between my ISP providing this service (block porn) or a thirdparty?

Currently I have to pay my ISP to receive Porn which I really don't want.

Then to make things worse, I have to pay a third party to block out this porn (which I can't opt out of) from my ISP.

It makes sense to do this at the ISP level.

Those that still want porn, well they can simply "opt in" to receive it. I seriously don't understand the problem here.
