gzt: The Expanse. Thanks to the many recommendations here. It's like Bladerunner + Firefly with anything else thrown in. Detectives, shootouts, spaceships, pandemics, spacebattles. Fills a gap waiting for the next Star Trek series.
The Expanse has a bit of a Battlestar Galactica (remake) feel to it as well - which is another show I would recommend to anyone who hasn't seen it. Studio interference caused some issues in the first half of Season 3 as they insisted on having more standalone episodes (but that was soon rectified), and the finale was quite polarising among fans. But overall highly recommended.
I don't have high hopes for Star Trek Discovery. I don't much like the actress they have for the main character (Sasha from The Walking Dead - but that could be down to her character in that show being awful). I also don't like the idea of a "main character" at all, Star Trek has always been an ensemble show.
