I only have a problem with vertical videos when people re-size them for desktop and add content to the sides of them. They fit nicely on my vertical monitor if crap like that has not been done to it. Worst is adding blurry crap to the sides, like some people used to insist on doing when pillarboxing 4:3 content. Lamest reason ever given by someone in the broadcast world was they were worried about viewers getting screen burn.

I guess they stopped worrying when the decided it was necessary to put their watermark permanently at the bottom of the screen. I know what bloody channel I'm watching!

Idiotic default settings. Today's episode: Audio.

Toshiba Blu-ray player's default audio output is "downmix to stereo" rather than "play what's on the disc"
VLC, when presented with a surround system, will also downmix to stereo by default
Apple DVD Player will apply "dynamic range compression" to the soundtrack by default, in particular making music DVDs sound awful.

In what world do these defaults make sense? If you're connecting a Blu-ray player with a digital connection, then the device at the other end probably supports modern digital formats. With VLC, if you have surround hardware connected then you probably want to use it. Apple, for a company that claims to love music, why would you mess with what's provided on the disc?

Rant over... for now

The influenza strain presumed to be A/H3N2 which is rampant in Chch, which really ruined my weekend, and for which the influenza A/H3N2 strain included in this years flu shot seemed to offer no protection at all.

Duty-Free prices – or certainly those advertised on JR’s website, who have the monopoly at Wellington.

7 – 8 years ago I used to travel a bit for work and would stock up on brandy. These days I don’t get out much but I’ve got a holiday coming up and decided to have a look. Hardly worth it now, duty free it’ll only be about $5 cheaper than what I can get it for at the local Big Barrel store on special.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

A few things have made my blood boil in the past 24 hours...

1. Dick Smith's painfully slow delivery service. I needed a new HDMI cable (5m) and Jaycar's was on the expensive side ($50), so I went online and found that DS would sell me one for $15 including shipping. I ordered it 10 days ago (on a Sunday afternoon), and it took 4 hours to get an email confirming the order had been received. It took another 24 hours to get confirmation that it had been dispatched. The email then declared that it would take 2 days for the tracking to activate, and another 3-5 days for the item to arrive (but that these times were average, and they "regularly exceed the average"). To me, this is worse than "average", giving themselves 7 business days (in practice, 9 days) to deliver something as simple as a cable. In my case, it arrived today (10 days since dispatch). While they will probably argue that they met their stated timeframe, it's hardly anything to crow about, when I can regularly get stuff shipped from the US or UK in not much more time than this. My wife had something shipped from the Netherlands and it took 14 days from hitting send. If DS have any hope of surviving then they will need to do a lot better than aim for delibery in 7 business days. For my part, I won't bother with DS again.

2. Driving through town, a guy stepped up to the pedestrian crossing and stopped, waving me through. He has right of way, I've stopped to let him cross - just cross, already! Your "courtesy" isn't helpful in this case!!!

3. I bought a new electric blanket on the weekend, when the old one (nearly) caught fire. Instead of the classic three-position switch, this new one has a more complicated controller - an on/off switch and two buttons, one for setting the temperature, one for the timer. These are very simplified controls though - you push the button to cycle through the scale. The timer starts at 1 (hour) and goes up to 9 hours and then to "H" for 12 hours. This means that you can't leave it on indefinitely, the maximum is 12 hours of operation. The temperature scale, though, starts at 0, which delivers zero heat (I checked, stone cold when on 0). Why??? What earthly reason would you need an electric blanket to be "on", but not producing any heat. If it was getting too hot and you wanted to turn down the heat you could drop it down to 1, but if you drop it down to 0, why not just use the off switch, which has the same function? What made it worse was my wife who reckoned she could see the reason, but couldn't articulate it and didn't want to talk about it, just insisted that it "made sense." Gah!

Moving on...

Webpages that are slow to load (usually ads) so that when you click on a button nothing happens, and then the page finally loads and everything gets shunted down, and there's now something else where you clicked and you head off somewhere completely different.

Thank goodness for smartphones that show the fraudulent perception that duty free is cheap. However, I think that view disappeared a few years ago now.

It was a sad day when auck int airport removed competition from duty free.

People who write "5am in the morning" or "6pm at night".

5am can only be in the morning and 6pm can only be at night. "5 O'clock in the morning" is fine. "5am" is fine. "5am in the morning" should get you shock therapy.

'Dick Smith' is Kogan - based in Australia. That will be where your HDMI cable will have come from. No excuse for it taking ten days, though I suspect the 'free freight' on it will have meant they sent it the cheapest (read:slowest) way possible. You could have got one from aliexpress with free freight in about the same time frame maybe.

I catch a ferry daily, and one of the crew who does the safety/welcom aboard announcements always says the toilets are on the 'Port hand Side'. Gah.
