Behodar:

I'm working from home this afternoon and just witnessed a council worker coming out to look at a drain that blocks every time there's rain. He pulled all the gunk out of it, so will it get blocked again next time? Yes, yes it will. The gunk was left in the gutter next to the drain, so will simply get washed back into it again.

In Wellington the council works dept used to have vacuum trucks clearing the stormwater sumps. Then that had to be outsourced. The contractor still has some sucker trucks but they range over a wider area. I remember a storm with widespread road flooding and all the trucks were in Palmerston North. Our street still had regular gutter clearance. With luck the drain was cleared knowing the gutter truck was due.

They out sourced the sucker trucks in Dunedin too.

Then heavy rain fell and south Dunedin flooded because they hadn't been cleaned recently.

Sometimes out sourcing is cheaper because they don't actually do the work and when caught talk about "unexpected demand" "unforseen circumstances" " our new staff weren't aware xyz had been problem in past"

Ah yes, but upstream or downstream from it? Because your smarter-than-average council worker will place it *downstream*, so it'll be the next drain that will get blocked. After only a few years, the material will have gone through all the drains and sumps and whatnot, and the problem will be solved.

Well, that depends on whether it's been unblocked properly or not. If not, then it'll make a lake as usual, and the stuff will all end up in the same drain again.

Out of nowhere I just received an email from The Guardian about ‘managing my preferences’. They seem to think I have an account with them. I do not. I have never had anything to do with them. Never subscribed, never clicked, nothing. I wrote them explaining this and asking to be removed from their mailing list. Their response:

“We have received your email but the email address you have used has not been matched to any email addresses we have on file linked to an account. If you are emailing on behalf of a Guardian subscriber please note that due to the General Data Protection Regulations we are only authorised to discuss or disclose information about an account with the account holder themselves.

In order to assist you could you please do one of the following:
·    Re-send your email from the address you have registered with The Guardian
·    Ask the account holder to email us from their email address if you are not the account holder.
Please note that if your subscription is with a third party such as Apple or Google then they will hold your billing and account details.

We do this in part to protect your account and ensure that there is no unauthorised access. Many questions you may have can be answered through the help centre on our website.”

Oh joy. I am on a bot carousel. I don’t have an address registered with The Guardian. There is no account holder. Here we go round and round. Whee.

I wrote them back explaining all this. I don’t have high expectations.

I have yet to figure out any rhyme or reason for why, maybe 1 in 50 times when I get out of my car, it goes "beep beep beep" and "warns" me on the display that the door is open. Of course it is; I'm getting out! What do you expect me to do right after I park and switch off?!

@behodar it may think you are leaving the keys in the car. Happen to have a spare set with you when it does it?

It's not because of the phone left on the charging pad?

Mine does that.

The car is lonely and afraid that you won't come back? 🙃

Holey cow - aliens implicated in Strange Occurrences:

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/aliens-only-explanation-for-mutilated-cows-found-on-aussie-farm-farmers-say/2UKN2FVUGVCT7HMQ4NF6ETPZTA/

From TFA:

The cows were found in various stages of decomposition, but no blood or traces of movement were at the scene.

accompanied by a photo of a dried-out skeletal cow carcass that's probably been there for a year or more.

Yup, could only be aliens. Definitely not the million other things that can kill a cow, and the other things that come along later and eat bits of it. I wonder if it happened on the same night as the Great Stepney Fire, when Uncle Bertram's old oak table completely vanished? That was aliens as well.
