I saw a man today ready for a winz seminar turned away because he was 3 minutes late. But when we were in the seminar there was plenty of empty seats. He could have taken one of the three jobs offerred and I feel sick to my stomach that there is no justice here. No voice for those moved over into the zone of stupid late times, um three minutes late? is this Nationals way of improving work opportunities? it took us more than 20 minutes to be animal farmed into the seminar... :(

He was told - That there were no more available seats left and that he could not attend. But we were told in the seminar that people did not show up and were in breach of their contracts. There was space.. :|

Plenty of space...............................

We all never received an appropriate letter of this appointment, it was saddled under false pretension. I don't worry about this, personally I fulfill my contract to winz. But, we certainly need better clarification. It is essential for any body of people to act under clear statements and conditions to form trust and believability

Apologies given under the reason that resources were low to be sending out individual letters are meek.

I have lost hope in the system. C'mon, the poor guy was a few minutes late, there was plenty of room for him, 15 + seats free??? CMON whats wrong here??? waste of time asking him to re-apply. That poor man has to wait, his family has to freak out. Life for people unknown - does suck harder than a noir biscuit :(

Sad one New Zealand, I thought we were a country that was good and strong, instead I see a bunch of neo nazi politicals, running for face value and posing as the good for all. It breaks families and destroys mana. National, wake up, your missing some poignant and important aspects of this countries lower economic condition.

Yes it really annoys me that the idea of Government Departments actually being part of the "Public Service" and thus being there to serve us as the taxpayers who fund them, has completely disappeared.

Your above incident is on a par with people turning up for their driving tests 2 minutes late and being told they had failed and would need to rebook and pay another fee, while the examiner disappeared back inside to do nothing until their next appointment.

How funny, even people on a government benefit get taxed. Fractional reserve banking systems anyone?

Yes, lets enslave the world in debt.

Ironic that a Government agency that deals with unemployed people doesn't have enough staff. :)

Good point. Branch and location means if WINZ looks into this they know where to start.

Many valid point made in the posts above.
However it does surprise me somehwat that many people believe that being a few minutes late for something is OK. Any mitigating circumstances aside, punctuality is a fair and reasonable expectation.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

I agree to a point. I have a personal limit of 5 minutes of lateness for both personal and professional meetings, if someone's later than that tough luck, they can reschedule. My time is valuable to me and being late shows a lack of respect for both me and my time.

For winz though a one off lateness shouldn't be penalised like this, but if they're always late then sure, they need to learn that other peoples time is valuable.

+1  I couldn't agree more.  If it's important, be early.

Really does pay to arrive on time. I have learned this lesson before, I arrive at least half an hour early now, them queues can get quite long. You know I could be somewhat wrong too, reading the experience from where I was sitting. He may have arrived 10 - 15 minutes late and was trying to pull a swift one by saying he was only three minutes late, as he had missed the first seminar and was trying to get into the next.. but still.. there was room lol. Just did not make any sense to me to be turning him away.

Would be a tough job working at winz, all them rules and protocols to follow, lawl..

Never rely on Winz to find you work they are pretty useless at it, business don't want to tell Winz if they have a vacancy going because winz do not do check ups and just send any tom dick and harry along, in one incident one case manager sent a gang member to an IHC job. IHC sent him back, LOL.

And when you find work they will note it down in their books that the case manager assigned to you found you the job yet they didn't even know about the job! If only Paula Bennett really knew what goes on in work and income departments, she hasn't the slightest clue. Work and Income should be scraped.

Oh and don't ask questions when with your case manager that might be too hard for her/him to answer they hate that. I always would.

If I ever have to go back to that place again I will be taking with me a recorder and record everything they tell me.

They send you to seminars because they dont have anything else for you to do and they repeat the same thing over and over.

They send you to those pathetic free courses that are just laughable. You will learn about meditation, you will color in pictures of mountains with goals at top of the mountain and your aims below. Color in more pictures, sing songs yeah you read right sing songs. Please tell me Paula how do these courses help the unemployed?

What is better: is send them out to work even if its voluntary, go back to the basics send us out to farms/ workplaces and let mainly the young ones get some job experience. Singing songs and coloring in pictures is not job experience FFS!

Months ago I told my case manager to shove her job where the sun don't shine and went out and found work within two weeks.

Work & Income are making it harder to be on the benefit, and by this I mean they are making you for fill your contractual obligations to them which are very easy to for fill, which before they were incredibly lenient.

I am on the benefit and seeking enterprise allowance which is a Work & Income grant to enable people to start their own business.

I get called into meetings occasionally (far more recently) and see a huge number not turning up, not bringing the simple things that the case managers request, or just being late.

Most of them have an incredibly poor attitude when it comes to who's fault it is for their problems, and really need to step up their game if they're going to keep getting $200 or so dollars a week for FREE.

If you are friendly, helpful and meet your obligations, Work & Income will be more than friendly and helpful to your needs and requests.

I agree being punctual IS very important. Without knowing this persons reason for being late it is going to be hard to judge, however if he was a few minutes late for work - would his employer send him home? I would say he would have at the very least be asked that the time be made up.
