They want to cut the Snapper fishing limit for recreational because numbers are not reaching target levels.

Options seem to be:

1. Cut recreational (limits)
2. Cut Commercial (limits)
3. Cut both.

Now Im a bit of a greenie and believe in sustainability, but commercial quotas far outweigh what recreational take, so why should recreational bear the brunt of the reduction? (probably because commercial fishing is income for our poor economy).

Personally I dont mind a recreational cut for a proportinally equal cut to commercial quotas!!

Other thoughts?

I believe in 'fishing for tomorrow' so if cuts are needed for sustainability then so be it. Take what is needed for a feed a put the rest back, especially breeding stock. One does not need to ones bag each fishing trip.

I think once again the recreational fishers are be singled out as the problem where as I think that the problem is the commercial operations that think nothing of rape and pillage of the fish stock.

Yup both should be cut honestly, I love snapper, but I always catch only what I need for the day or two and then catch and release the rest.

For the sake of the fish stocks the commercial fishery should be reduced, even if this means loss of exports, jobs and reduced tax take. In fact, I think New Zealand's fisheries should primarily be for New Zealanders, and that fish exports should be vigorously controlled. What Kiwi's pay for fish at the supermarket is a product of the global demand for our fish. If we exported less fish, and diverted more of the catch for local consumption then there might be a fairer price for New Zealand consumers.

We should fish for local demand and leave the rest in the sea for future generations.

The snapper stocks are recovering in the SNAP1 block, only not as fast as expected.

There was going to be commercial quota cuts, but the industry has pressured MPI and is now "possible increased monitoring" - LOL douuble speak as if any I have heard ...

Hiowever, OTOH, I think 27cm (25cm Commercial), and 9 limit catch bag per day is somewhat not right - you can barely get a fillet of a 27cm snapper !!! ( dunno how the commerical quota can justify 25cm!!).
9 Snap per day, per person !!!!! I see these charters out on the gult with a dozen "fishos", all hauling up their daily limit ? That aint fishing, that's gluttony !!!
Sharing your catch with family and whanau ? Yes, nice, and good and all all that, but thay can catch their fish at the supermarket, just like they get their red meat !!
I'd like to see a 5-6 limit, and 30cm for Rec and customary, and similar ratios for commercial.

All seems very reasonable to me.

But those "fishos" may only go out once or twice a year so what is wrong with a person taking their limit?

Because even if you go out once or twice a year, realistically you can't eat more than 5-6 decent sized fish before they go off, and for those people who have a genuine issue, they could always take an extra person with them and get 10-12.

We the rec fisherman have already taken cuts to our limit 15 down to 10 then 10 down to 9
A 40% cut in our quota
What have the commericial guys done to help the fishery?
Nothing they ended up taking our cuts in quota and have carried on their merry way.

Its time the commericial guys took a cut in quota not us.

I agree it needs to be a joint cut at least. Be prepared for a jump in snapper prices though.

Agreed, Ive thrown back so many "legal" fish it isnt funny, just because its not worth my time prepping them for the bbq - get a tiny fillet off a 27cm fish.

I throw them back and ask for their granddad to come visit my line instead.

My mate and I try to get about 5 fish each, but some days we're happy with 5 between us long as theyve put up a fight ;)

My view (along with many of yours) is that Commercal takes way more fish than Recreational.

I'm interested - has anyone comissioned a report to see what it would cost to:
a) Ban all commercial fishing
b) Pay all commercial fishermen/woman their usual wages for a period while helping them retrain.
c) retain all recreational fishing, including charter boats where you have your own individual limit (no nets allowed).

Benefits to this:
1) We no longer have to pay the MASSIVE subsidies on diesel for fisherman
2) THere will be fish left in NZ in 50 years time (can't say much about the rest of the world)
3) Benefits for tourism would be huge as stocks recover we could be a RECREATIONAL fishing capital of the world (like an African safari park - look at how much they charge)

My understanding is that the way things are going now many stocks will be depleted in 20 years anyway so the commercial fishermen/women might as well retrain now.

NZ is unique in that our territorial watters are MASSIVE, and our neighbours are far away.  We are uniquely positioned to be able to ban all commercial fishing, thus preserving stock for the future.  If you want fish, you would then have to go get it yourself recreationally, or pay to go on a charter where you can still get your recreational limit.  We can not continue treating fish as a "right" - there simply isnt enough to go around.

That is all.
