So at the beginning of this year I changed jobs and took on the role of Factory Manager of a manufacturing plant. On average over the past 12 months the energy bill was around 28k , I of course started looking at ways to reduce our power consumption and one of these was to have installed a power correction unit. Previously we were around .73 on power correction and now we are on .99 which is where I want to be. I also over Easter (a full week) shut down 1/2 the plant for maintenance.

Our latest energy bill for April is 30k which is 2k more than our average. I did not agree with this and contacted Mercury energy (a week and a half ago) and asked for somebody to come and see me to sort out the very complex bill we received.

They took 1 1/2 weeks to get back to me despite me ringing every other day.

Their answer is they will not be sending anybody as they have nobody in the south island. The commercial manager I was dealing with is going to send an email from their complex billing team to explain why it is higher when it should be lower. If it is that complex they should be sending somebody to see me to explain.

Really a 25k+ monthly account and they cannot even get somebody to come see me. I think this is completely unacceptable and if we were not locked into an account with them I would be looking to change immediately.

Mercury Energy your business customer service is disgusting.

Check your contract for poor service escapes. Also talk to other providers to see if any will meet any penalty from Mercury in order to pick up your business.

If your bill is $30k a month, I would expect them to send someone even if their office was in London...!!

Never said it was but if I had a single customer contributing $360,000 to my business I'd take their needs very seriously. Certainly seriously enough to send someone to meet with them.

$360K has to be taken in context, it is probably in the lower end to mean  of commercial customers

You'd be surprised how competitive the market is now. I have a friend tell me they planned to switch (and they are only a domestic customer) and once the initiated the switch, their incumbent called them up to offer an incentive to stay.

So you can imagine how much a $360K client might be valued.

In fact the whole are of saves and win-backs are a subject of study now by the regulator

Just not flights to take into account,

Are you going to pick them up from the airport or pay for the rental car / taxi and a days wages and food?

It's a very competitive market, so I would shop around.

I work for Contact ( in the generation side of the business), I don't know full details of our offering but I think you should be able to get a dedicated account manager and someone to work with you on energy efficency.

For a $360k a year customer? Absolutely. And take him for a decent lunch to boot.

Coffee, not lunch and on a scheduled visit if no one locally based. Would video meet though to help resolve. The technical can be done remotely.
