Just want to check and see that there are no rules that must be adhered to if I build my boys a play area in the garden.  I want to build them a "fort" and a flying fox, things aren't so PC yet that I'd need planning permission for that would I ?

Think main things that could of concern, is the height, and closeness to any fence lines...  give the local council a call, they'll confirm.

The DBH has a pdf which outlines whether you need a BC or not for the work you intend on doing. Page 72 has some info on private playground equipment. It doesn't go into much detail but it appears you are able to build almost whatever you want so long as it's not more than 3m high including a 1m high barrier.
