Is there anything in there that will affect us, apart from costing $6 to leave the country?

If you haven't signed you or your sprogs up to Kiwisaver yet, you just lost out on a grand each.

They are busy trying to distract everyone with the John Campbell resignation before people start asking questions. (funny how that came out at the exact same time, surely that could have been released eariler in the day? later? The exact same time as the budget? riggght..)

Yep $6 and $16 fee's are the only thing of note for me.

Am I missing something here, what has a Govt Budget to do with John Campbell ?

Basically 50% will like it 50% will hate it, today that is. Next week 80% will have forgotten it and it will be business as usual.

Ummm really, you cant see what im saying? i thought it was pretty clear. All the news headlines are focusing on John Campbell instead of the budget, coincidence? Perfectly executed news story at the exact moment the budget comes out. But it doesn't matter, i just thought it was a perfect distraction technique and i was voicing my opinion which the last time i checked is what a forum is intended for.

It would be if Media Works had anything to do with the Government. Media Works is foreign owned.

I think its a fair balance for the current conditions -

More money going to child poverty where its "needed". The money has to come from somewhere to balance this so removing the kickstart of Kiwisaver is a reasonable compromise. Yes it disadvantages those that aren't yet in the scheme, but do the needs of a future advantage outweigh the immediate needs of child poverty?

The tax / airport levy, meh, small additional increase with limited effect but will help.

Ofcourse no budget addresses the causes, merely the symptoms, why is child poverty so bad in NZ? Is it spread throughout all NZ or concentrated in a few areas, if spread out, then its a wider issue than if concentrated in only a small amount of communities. If it is concentrated in a small amount of communities, what do they have in common, why are they different, what can be done to stop repeating the cycle?

I think that it is more that there is nothing really to complain about in the budget. Benefits have risen for the first time since 1977 (apart from the inflation adjustments). The Newspapers won't want to bleat about that, and Andrew Little certainly cant bleat about that (though I'm sure he will find a way). Border protection is going to be beefed up (and travelers will pay for it, which is fair). The only thing I suppose is the axing of the $1000 kickstart in Kiwisaver, but 2.5million of us are members already, and I'm sure a lot more will become members before it is cut off.

The news outlets probably think the Campbell thing is more 'newsworthy' (aka, get more people commenting on their social media sites).

No they won't, the kickstart is axed effective immediately, so unless you are already joined as of today's date, no boost for you.

Is it just me, or is the plan to address current housing issues laughable? $52 million set asside, so I guess that'll help, what, 60 people with current house prices in Auckland? :p

And wow, they can axe the $1000 instantly, just like that? I'm somewhat surprised by that one.

The axing of the Kiwisaver headstart is a terrible, terrible idea. We need to create a savings culture and also to support the capital markets and to encourage people to save using investment vehicles like managed funds instead of just throwing every $$ at the property markets. This isn't going to help.

unfortunately there is not a bottomless pit so to pay for much needed measures to help the poor and child poverty sacrifices need to be made else where. As for the Auckland housing issues the government has already
announced measures along with Reserve Bank measures.
