Have you done the DNS fix on your router/computer?

Yes i have tried it on both. Have reset and powered off the router. Tried both DSN number given on the site and nothing has worked.

I just called one of the emergency numbers and it is working perfectly now. Not sure what i did wrong as I had previously done all the steps he give. Oh well.... no more complaining from me (well not for a little while anyway)

Although I'm happy everythings working again I have to say I'd be pretty disappointed if they didn't offer some kind of compensation. 3 day outage is pretty unacceptable and their response has been very weak.

You didn't read the thread, did you? He offered people a "transition" to another company. His email address is @callplus, a.k.a. Slingshot. This means you being on hold instead of contacting him might miss some good stuff. Who knows?

I was bringing a balanced view opposing the blind NZNet bashers, the same people who imply that NZNet attracts people that just want a cheap ISP plan and lack the brains of IT "professionals". I have earlier in this thread very clearly stated that i have changed to Telecom.

i changed to telecom too. are you getting a disconection fee from nznet? im worried that i will. but i am refusing to pay it since this weeks been so bad. no phone for a week.

i was thinking of going to slingshot but decided to go to a more reliable contact. telecom. also cos i waited 45mins on the phone and stuff that. id rather not

Cheap - In New Zealand, it is my view that the word has two meanings.

1. Reflection of quality.
2. Reflection of price.

Telecom and Telstra, from my experience are never cheap with respect to price and recent history has proven them both to be cheap on quality.

So are they both cheap providers?

Telecom - The company has just thrown $2.5 million dollars back at users because it's usage metering solution failed to deliver. Clearly the didn't put enough investment in to it to address the good outcome.

Telstra - TBox - do I need to say any more?

Low Cost Providers

There is always a constant stream for noise from people wanting a lower cost and more value.

From time to time a group of people agree to have a go at delivering more value to customers via a number of vehicles.

Most of the time all consumers benefit from this. As their approach puts pressure on the market, the existing providers start to loose customers and fight back with more aggressive pricing, which they can often afford to do but don't when there is no pressure applied to them.

Often this also puts pressure on big providers to make big upgrades, which is good news for industry vendors and those technical people who design, install and commission this gear.

Ironic

When a company like NZNet has a hick up the arrogant and pompous IT professionals jump on the like a pack of wolves tearing them apart and driving customers back to their own companies.

With out these small fringe providers, the fat cats will become lazier and lazier, focus on investor return and do little to upgrade anything, in turn creating less demand/need for designers, installers and innovators.

Real Out Come

Many people come to the point of simply staying with Telecom because it is the biggest and oldest provider in the New Zealand market. They know it costs them more, the don't care. Being without service and moving from provider to provider is just annoying for many people.

Many people have more than enough money to just pay the extra cost.

The impact is that this reduces sales opportunities for those of you in the sales area as you simply can not convince customers, who have had a bad experience, to move again and take another telecommunications risk.

What Should We Be Doing?

As industry professionals (and I use that term very loosely after reading bits of this thread) what we should be doing if getting focused on getting this smaller provider back on the road, understanding what went wrong and why and doing what we can to ensure it doesn't happen again and have impact on customers.

Why Did It Fail?

I don't know. I know nothing more about this provider than what is written in GZ here and has been mooted in the IRC channel.

However what I do know is that small providers often attempt to push the envelope for consumers. They, for example,

* might take on a bigger link at a lower over all cost in the hope of selling the capacity.

Nothing unbusiness like with this. Retailers do it all the time. They order a big order of something, put it on the shelf, do a sale, move most of the stock at a low margin then attempt to sell the balance at a higher price once interest has been established. It works well most of the time, but some times even the smartest retailers get suck with a glut and end up taking a loss on a line.

* they play suppliers off against each other.

Also nothing unbusiness like with this either and companies do it all the time to get better deals.

The Problem

The problem as I see it is that some times smaller providers who don't have the deep pockets that a billion dollar company has, some times come off the rails.

I've seen this happen in the Australian market any number of times over the past decade.

The Reality

In my view we all have to thank those customers who are prepared to give the smaller guy a go, who will risk their business with those guys. Without these customers we would still be in the dark age we had three decades ago with:

* One choice of expensive, lazy, government owned and control provider
* One choice of company (government department) to work for
* No possibility of advancement or learning unless you move overseas
* No industry pressure to bring us new toys to play with

... the list goes on and on.

Just spotted those phone numbers above (bit hard to keep track with not much internet!)

Of course nobody is answering them now...

And my internet still isn't working!

I had two calls from NZNET staff trying to get it going this morning, and they promised to call back again once i had done a modem factory reset, but no call happened!

Sigh.

you have my sympathy at least they are trying to help you. they dont even help me with my phone ;/ im going back to telecom next week. .. taking longer due to monday holiday... i dont care about the disconnection fee now. stuff nznet

Don't worry about a disconnect fee. I told my bank to stop paying my monthly direct debit debit immediately and so they did. If NZNet wants to talk to me about a disconnect fee or that i should have cancelled my contract one month ahead, then I do not want to talk to me. I will tell them I have technical issues. They do not want to talk to me so i do not want to talk to me. They will be in such disarray that they have other worries than chasing you for a disconnect fee. Think of all the businesses they had as customer and who will now go to dispute tribunals for 3 days lost VOIP and Internet without any explanation from their side.

Thanks for this Don, excellent and to the point overview.
There were some NZNet bashers here who at the same time ridiculed the people that had them as a provider. they called themselves 'IT professionals'. Good to hear now from a professional with a professional look on things.
Cheaper is not necessarily bad, and 'you get what you pay for' is a stupid adagium. Look for example at @degrees. A cheaper telco company with excellent customer service, a great product and according to the self-crowned IT professionals on this forum stupid customers as they go for the best deal.
