BMarquis: Assuming you are in a Chorus area - @chorusnz will be able to help on the "what should we do?", "How can we do it?" and "Who can help us?" But... If it were me, I'd be wanting to ensure I was future proof. 1) Who knows what ONT technology may come in the future... Maybe I should know! I have an inkling... but it is a fast moving world... 2) Future LAN technology. If you run cat6 from the ONT to the comms cupboard, what do you do if/when fibre for the LAN side becomes a thing? 3) UPS (as already mentioned) 4) Getting everything comms-y in the same place. Taking all of that into account I'd be trying to the the ONT into the comms cabinet. Of course there is a doability and (maybe) cost aspect for you to consider.
What chevrolux has said covers it pretty well. @Earbanean i think you've got the right idea doing it in 3 parts. Tech comes out and completes street to ETP, put the order on hold while renovations happens and internal cables go in. Lastly get the tech back out to splice and install ONT in the comms cupboard. Gets you the best overall outcome 😊
dfnt: How do you request just the ETP to be installed?
We’ve bought a house which recently had fibre made available. I want to sort out structured cabling first which will determine the location of the ONT, as this will happen after we move I was going to move from our current fibre plan to VDSL2
So how do I do that in addition to requesting the ETP to be installed? Just request it via my RSP?
A Fibre connection is done in three parts. The scope where our technician confirms with you how the Fibre will be run. We then build network from the roadside up to the ETP as discussed. Finally the internal cables and ONT are connected. Traditionally these were split into two or three separate visits and so you could just schedule the final part (Internal wiring and ONT) for a future date that suits you. These days it’s usually condensed into one day, so simply ask the tech to only do up to the ETP and re-schedule a final connect date.
Getting VDSL first while you do the work is a good plan as copper is usually just a quick connect job. Just order the copper with your broadband provider at the same time and let them know it’s to keep you connected while we work on the build. A good provider will understand. ^Richard

So anyway, the Chorus tech came this morning. He was a good guy and helpful. He agreed with the approach of just doing the ETP before the reno and our sparky laying the hybrid cable in the reno. However, it looks like getting fibre to the house may be a bit of an issue first.
Firstly they need to get it to our pole from one further up the road. That sounds simple. Then they need to find the duct at the bottom of our pole that our copper is in. Again should be simple. Lastly they need to find the end of the duct near the front of house and see if they can pull through that. That seems harder and he wouldn't do today.
The copper wires come into the sub floor space adjacent to our basement, but not the duct. The duct must end just outside, the wall, partially buried and probably under a low balcony area. Maybe we can dig and find them now, but maybe we have to wait till the balconies are ripped off in the reno. Then fingers crossed they can pull through the duct. If not, we have a concrete driveway to cross, which is actually technically a road, so not ours.

Actually I had another look under the sub floor and it seems really obvious there's a duct coming in with the copper. I'm not sure how the Chorus tech didn't see this or didn't know what it was.
There's a duct entering from the foundations with two black wires. The two wires go through a wall into the basement to a box with 'Phone POE' written on it, then two or three blue wires come back through into the sub floor, then up into the house where our phones are. The Chorus guy said the blue wires going up into the floor/wall was the copper entering from some duct outside. But obviously the black wires in the duct are the copper from the street.
