think id just get the cheaper adsl and wait for the UFB. with apartments (single story), is it usually just body corporate approval for the mdu that takes time?

feel less stressed now, sorry for the cynicism.

There really shouldn't be any port waiter for ADSL in an urban area. You can ask your ISP who will be able to tell you which cabinet you're on.

There are basically 3 stages for UFB install: consent, build and install. The first two can take ages, and the body corp can deny consent. After these two stages are done the install will take just a week or two.

last time I was in central Melbourne - there were no ports too! luckily the owner of all the equipment aka Telstra (pay 2x more) I could get connected to ADSL2. 10 Mbps down, 0.5Mbps up.

How long have you been on this port waiter? Maybe give it a couple of days? i'm pretty sure when I changed isps a while ago they said i was on a "port waiter" which worried me immensely at the time as you hear about people waiting for months on port waiter, but then 2 days later i got a connection date which was connected in something like 5 days.

im so glad you did your due diligence before you moved

which cabinet you are fed from depends on your address

Order ADSL
once ADSL is installed order VDSL/UFB.
if you are only there for a short period i would just go with VDSL, you should get decent speeds

Just be patient, the port waiter won't take long and it isn't worth signing up with Vodafone as you'll get shocking performance from their red network and be contracted out also.

It also isn't Chorus's fault that they're having to wait on bodycorp to get your UFB live.

Hardly third world, more lack of patience for something likely to take a week or so.

Behodar: Order ADSL for starters, then once it's up and running order either VDSL or UFB.

Just order the thing you want unless there's a reason that it's not initially available (e.g., mdu hasn't been wired for ufb yet)

And there is your problem right there .. you don't own the property the fibre needs to be pushed through so Chorus has to send letters to each interested party and get their consent ... and a single person saying "no I don't want it done" will nix you getting UFB, and I also doubt that Chorus will chase people that swiftly to get answers so if someone forgets to reply or misplaces the letter ....

I suggest you get generous with cake and beer for the body corporate members :-)

I also suggest talking with your local residents association and local media.

You need to work harder to get others in your area to connect to the fibre so that the VDSL ports are freed up in your area.

Find out where the cabinet is and where it reaches.

Write a flyer, pay some local kids to do a letter box drop for you.

You want to run your business from your home, to make you and income. The expectation that Chorus should invest in more cabinet resources just because your community is not working together is just rude.

Also, with respect to your comments about the Australians, yes I very much hear your frustration, but get your facts right and take some more ownership of this problem!

So in summary:
1. Australian internet sucks. No really, you do not want their internet situation or their laughable NBN.
2. Your particular internet situation is by no means any indicator of NZ as a whole, NZ internet is actually very good.
3. ADSL Ports are more available than VDSL ports. Sign up to ADSL and then go onto port waiting list for VDSL.
4. Fibre installs in MDUs take ages. Don't hold your breath. Even if your body corp is right behind the idea, itll still take a few months at least. This is because of the sheer amount of work needed, consents/paperwork/red tape and how fibre isn't classified as a utility like phone lines are under the RMA.

there is lies the problem with spending so much on UFB that people in built up areas cant access. it should be mandatory to replace the copper technology where its been layed, like having power or a telephone line. imo.

yep have asked for adsl and stay on vdsl waiter. wont hold my breath with response times.

i rang the isp 15 days in advance of move and was told it wouldnt be a problem, that was my due diligence and i checked for services available.

again the aussie thing is cynicism at the situation with waiters and ufb availability, frustration. nothing more.

It would be nice for the end user if this was the case, but if they did then people would shout about the government stepping on peoples toes and getting all up in their property blah blah etc. If the landlords/bodycorp didn't like it, im sure the govt wouldn't be too pleased about losing favour with them.
Theres probably other aspects of it too, but yes as an end user i also wish there were less hoops to jump through.

ill be here 6-7 months, so waiting 4-12 months for internet is just nuts.

Then you should take that up with the body corp as to why they are being so slow to get it installed into the property.

Not a problem with NZ broadband if you moved into a property managed by idiots.

And expecting furthur investment into the dead end copper network when fiber is available in your street? Absurd.
