seretonin: All i know pat , is compass is crap and wished i never signed up , not a slingshot fan boi either , just suggested that as its the only other unlimited alternative (I think).

I retract this statement , turn out there was a wiring fault in the premises distribution point /exchange(forgot the name) on the property , anyway now that compass is working fine its a excellent service when running . customer service can be improved, but now the line quality and speed im getting are awesome , was able to stock my 1tb harddrive up in the first month . If anyway wants me to run tests let me know.

Check the wiring at your house!

I am also keeping an eye on this discussion. It is not acceptable people posting bad things about a company, being rude to other users, to then find out it was actually a wiring issue.

Wiring issues are your problem, not the ISP's.

Poor internal wiring is statistically the biggest single cause of DSL and internet problems in NZ. End of story.

If you're on an unlimited plan, how do you rate it? Is it throttled for VoiP, P2P or any other service you use, how does it cope with peak time congestion?

what are the positives and negatives?

Most importantly, who is your provider and what are you paying a month

Going to put something out there,

I see Maxnet have an unlimited plan now for $100 if you have POTS, and $125 if you want to go all Naked.

sounds like a great offer from maxnet. last year, I was paying $90 for 30GB of data on naked plan. insane, you work for maxnet, right?

I was on the unlimited waiting list for a week and just got an email that I will be able to sign up around the beginning of March. Pretty excited!

The most frustrating point in this discussion is that we can all choose different plans but in the end it still comes down to the quality of the 'last mile' - personally I cringe each time I see the Chorus van in our street (at least 2x/week since New Year). They have 'fixed' my line twice now (both I attribute to 'sticky fingers'. I feel sometimes they are playing a lottery with a mixed bag of good/bad cable pairs in my street.

So look hard at the infrastructure provider and ask if you have options, if I could get TC Cable I would pay.

yeah, home wiring is the first place to start when there is a broadband issue.

Now to help the OP with his question, we have been on Slingshot's $60 uncapped plan for 3 months and it has been very good. We game we youtube, we email we surf and never have any slow downs even at peak times, we even download torrents very fast. The traffic management only come into play when there is not enough bandwidth so far that is not the case . Occasionally there are hiccups but Slingshot fix it very quickly, I imagine they do not want to loose the customers they have clawed back and the Slingshot reps here are very helpful.
IMO the best thing to do is maybe get a phone line (Slingshot or otherwise) then sign up to the $60 plan which has no contract, so if it does not work out you can go to another ISP.
This is simply the best value uncapped plan ever, even if it's performance was not as good as it is.
BTW I do not work for Slingshot.

I saw this post while researching unlimited connections for a school. Here's what I found

Slingshot AYCE is a good service, I have used it in a shared flat of 5 people since it was launched, doing anywhere from 50GB to 500GB of traffic a month. It's always been a good connection. Not as fast as our fibre at work, but we are content with it.

Sometimes I have what is maybe a unrelated problem where after rebooting my router (and I've swapped out different routers/brands etc.) I can get a DSL sync, but a PPP connection seems to take a long time and the modem keeps timing out, sometimes restarting the DSL then gets a PPP connection.

This problem persisted even after moving from the telephone exchange to the new cabinet down the street. Have not bothered to work out whats causing it yet, but it's on my list.

Maxnet have a unlimited plan, which I'm going to sign a school up to, they seem very open about their network performance and heavily rate shaping torrents, and have a waiting list for their unlimited plan so as to manage it. Maxnet have always in my mind been a good reliable company.

The mammoth plan from Compass (which I've always found painful to deal with) is residential only FYI.
