Just received:

Woosh today announced a revolutionary new product that allows customers to use their iPhone or Android smartphones as their home phone; this allows customers to get free local calls and extremely cheap national and international calls while at home.

Richard Fry, GM of Operations explains, “Increasing numbers of New Zealander’s are using smartphones and enjoy the convenience of the applications and address books on the devices. The high calling rates these phones incur, compared to landline prices - mean that many people switch to their landline when they are in the house.”

With Woosh’s new Unzipped plans customers using their smartphones at home don’t have to worry about these high mobile rates any more.

“Customers can automatically connect their iPhone or Android phone to the home network when they enter their house. They can then use their smartphone to call anywhere in New Zealand for only 13c/minute. And even better on some of our Unzipped plans these calls will be free. This is a big price drop for customer’s use to paying around 40c per minute or more for these calls.”

The Unzipped plans will automatically come with Woosh’s capped landline and mobile calling plans for free, so customers will be able to call any landline or mobile in 40 countries, anytime, for up to 40 minutes per call, and pay no more than $2.40 for landline calls and $3.40 for mobile calls.

Fry adds,” The modem we selected provides customers with a reliable, fast and intuitive service. When combined with our Unzipped plans it will give New Zealanders access to the latest technology and applications - all at a low price.”

The price for the new Unzipped plans, which utilise the power of naked broadband and VOIP phone technology, will start from just $68 a month.

assuming I understand this correctly, this is a kind of voip app that you load onto your phone (in a similar vein to Viber, Skype etc) but rather than loading SKype out credit etc, the calls get billed to your woosh account.

If so, why restrict it to only working over your home wifi? why not allow people to use it over 3G to get the low calling rates everywhere? obviously it will use 3G data, but will still be heaps cheaper than mobile calling

Or am I missing something here?

My home phone does this at home already.

I've Paired my iPhone in the past via bluetooth to my landline phone. Outbound calls from the iPhone go out via the land phone and incoming calls on the iPhone ring on the iPhone.

Press releases are always designed to promote products and services for a company, your right that's exactly what they are doing, its just an SIP app, pretty sure plenty of people do this already

I get 1.5GB of data on my mobile plan. My home phone (SIP trunk) is registered constantly on my Android phone and I can make or take calls anywhere as if I was home (Assuming 3G coverage or WiFi).

The difference folks is that YOU got out, hunted for the app and VoIP service, configured and use it. They are packaging it and bringing to the consumer, ready to use.

Hey all, I just heard about the promo and the modems etc.

These look suspiciously like the FritzBox that I got through Snap for VDSL ?
http://www.fritzbox.eu/en/products/FRITZBox_Fon_WLAN_7360/index.php
( Linked 7360 got the 7340 )

Has anyone actually got one and had a look to see if it's been rebranded etc would be interesting to see one. :)

Hi McGee. Yes, we are using the Fritz!Box Fon WLAN 7270 with Unzipped plans.
German design, engineering and build, awesome features. We just love our new modem. Smile

Woosh offering seems kind of misleading to me.

There are lot of other VOIP applications available for most of the smartphone platforms
through which you can call 6-8 Cents per minutes to any NZ mobile. One of such company
is North east voip .

You seem to forget the basics. This product/service is clearly aimed to those people who want something ready to install and go - none of fiddling around with configuration, looking for providers, etc.
