This looks interesting, from the Google New Zealand blog. It overlaps with TrueNet in some sense, but it relies on people running tests instead of having a device (probe) that will do it automatically for you. I haven't tried it because it requires Java to run and I don't have it installed (and no interest of installing it).

Every person who uses broadband in New Zealand should be able to find out how well their broadband performs. That’s why we’re pleased to see the launch of a website that allows Kiwis to test their broadband.

Hosted by the Research and Education Advanced Network New Zealand (REANNZ), the New Zealand Broadband Test gives you an independent rating of your broadband performance and provides important information such as upload/download speeds along with other detail. Although no test is perfect, nzbt.org.nz uses a network diagnostic tool from Measurement Lab which is free, open sourced and internationally comparable.

Internet performance can vary for many reasons, from a user’s location, computer equipment or internet service provider. Using nzbt.org.nz, users will be able to choose to share and compare their internet performance with anyone in New Zealand.

The nzbt.org.nz is based on a similar site created by the EETT, the Greek telecommunications regulator. Local Kiwi developers Rabid have adapted the technology for New Zealand. What’s more, the technology behind the site is open source, meaning that the code can be used for free by others to develop, making it easy to create your own version.

Where is it measuring to and how fat are their pipes I wonder. My results look fairly dismal:

It's hosted at VUW in Wellington and is reachable over APE via SNAP. Somethings a bit amiss with it tho

I've seen problems before with MLAB services async routing causing issues with these tests and this one is using the same VUW node

Most problems are the result of previous solutions...

I have done a number of tests and it randomly tests from different servers..
I have seen a vocus (in Australia) test result and a test server at VUW which give completely wrong and different results.

Another few points..

Why not use a properly signed cert. a Self Signed one from a random person Brett Wilkins.. do I trust him?

It gets the Location Wrong.. It asks for my browser to get its location (which it uses) and then asks for the Location after the test but the google map shows the one it got from the browser. ALl my results on the public map are under my home address (as it thinks I am at home)

What speed do the tests nodes have? 100M only? or Gig? if so.. its slow Gigabit..

At home, it crashed my browser. At work, it returns "Server process not running: start web100srv process on remote server (ndt.iupui.donar.measurement-lab.org:3001)".

This is the third such project, after Epitiro and Truenet. Not sure we need that many. Actually I like Truenet better because it's not dependent on people's running a test now and then, but a consistent collection of signals over time...

MF I so have to agree with you, and others on this one.

I spent an hour last night updating java and then fighting with two web browsers before I got this thing to do a test.

I'm on Telstra's 100/10 100Gb plan, ran the test and it reports 10/8.5. So what does this tell us?

It is sending a message to the government that Telstra's new service is crap and doesn't do what it says?

Does it click the counter to say that my home is in the group where services are only 12% of UFB?

Or should it send a message that I shouldn't be running the test on my laptop while through 3 concrete walls, on my wifi connection?

The old saying "garbage in, garbage out'" comes to mind.

I'd also like to know how the tests are done? Couple of us did some testing a couple of weeks ago, and I know my TCL service will pull 93mbit from .us UDP but only ~10mbit TCP.

There has to be science to this and it doesn't appear to me to be very scientific at all.

I got it to run and it reported my connection as 3.6 down and I didn't pay attention to up. Speedtest.net reports ~12 down.

Yip... I'm thinking of deducting 10% from my GST payment this month cause if this is how the money is being spent I think it will deliver more value if I spend it down the boozer.

I also wonder what's going to happen as people on UFB start to use it and start seeing their service doesn't deliver a fraction of what they thought they were going to be paying for?

Sorry guys... I'm just a bit unconvinced on this one.

Ps: I clicked the thing to tell you where I am, I entered all the details last night after setting up an account... do I really have to tell you were I am ever single time I do a test? I'm in Christchurch... seems to be this data won't be worth the 1's and 0's of storage space it's held on?!

I can't get it to run in Opera 12.5.1497 click the test button and the screen darkens and that's it sooooooo pretty much another waste of tax payers money

I got this running easily. Now that its been running for awhile, there's a good overall picture developing of broadband and UFB speeds in NZ. I see it as giving a relative view of speeds....Rgds.....Laurie

No thanks, I had a run in with them over just looking at adsl ISP's.....the REANNZ one covers all ISP's and technologies so in my view is more balanced in its reporting. Rgds.....Laurie

It's also seriously flawed, primararily because of the archictecture and choise upstream connectivity delivering skewed results. There is no point in trying to engage with however because you've clearly formed a viewpoint already.

Truenet isn't without it's flaws either, but you'd probably get better data than this REANNZ test by simply drawing random numbers from a hat.

So new version of Opera (12.02 Build 1578 Platform x64) and same thing darkens the screen and nothing else happens

latest Java and what not but it's a no go even masking or spoofing as another browser doesn't work

just aswell I joined truenet atleast it works without a hassle
