We live in an area on the North Shore of Auckland with no VDSL or UFB.  We currently use Vodafone for ADSL2+ (in their Red Network) and get approx 10 Mb/s download.  However, we'd like to get a fixed IP address for Netflix and such like, but Vodafone effectively chanrge $20/month to get it.  That means they are soon to be gone burger.

So, can anyone suggest alternative ISPs that could provide similar (or better) speeds over ADSL, but also provide a fixed IP address?

Thanks for any help on this.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

Telecom give you a sticky IP which mostly doesn't change. Plus depending on your plan you get a static ip for free.

And our speeds will be as good as Vodafone unless there is something seriously whacked with your wiring

Don't need a static IP address for Netflix or any of those other services, Google is your friend and a number of threads on the same topic here on Geekzone :)

I'd actually done a fair bit of research on Geekzone (including the great post by Reven) and the conclusion I came to was that I wanted to go the DNS route (unblock-us) rather than VPN.  As I understand it, that requires a fixed IP address.

Are you saying that's not thecase?

any normal isp can provide static ip's affordably.

i'd try just asking if they can make your static ip free or a more reasonable charge, if that doesn't work then shift isp's. ($5 is reasonable)

Can't have done that much research then lol...

Unblock-US doesn't require you to have a static IP. It is "simply" a DNS modification service. You just swap your ISP's DNS servers for Unblock-US servers so that when you go to netflix.com they do some DNS magic and make it look like you are from the states.

they may only allow requests from validated source ip addresses that have paid money.

a dynamic IP is insecure anyway, you could find legal action taken against you if someone has done dodgy things on one of your previous ip's.

There are quite a few posts around GZ, that talk specifically about the need for a static IP and the problems that occur if you don't have it.  Are you saying they are all wrong, or that something has changed about the way unblock-us works?

Unblock US needs to be manually updated afaik each time your IP changes, so strictly speaking you do not need a fixed/sticky IP, but it is a pain if you don't.

As suggested above many ISPs offer a 'sticky' IP address, which although not marketed as fixed, will very rarely change if you leave your modem on 24/7. Orcon, Slingshot, Telecom come to mind, although I would be surprised if VF do not although someone could fill me in here...

Edit: Just to be clear: in my experience with Orcon, Slingshot & Telecom of UnblockUS/Netflix, there have been no problems at all as they don't tend to change your IP address

i think the sticky ip on telecom most only be on new plans, ime with telecom i've seen it change ip's drastically multiple times a day to completely different subnets with completely different reverse lookups and completely different performance.  it was on an unstable connection that reconnected a lot though, but it reconnected pretty quickly.

bloody annoying though, kept screwing my ssh up.

Interesting. I know that with Slingshot, even with disconnects, you keep the same IP, in fact I've seen reports that you need to disconnect for 24hrs to get a new IP.

I think I was on an old plan the last time I tried, the same as you, but it was a stable connection so I never saw that behaviour. Shouldn't be a problem for the OP?

You can validate your IP on the Unblock site, it most definitely is not a requirement to have a static IP.

But if it changes, then everytime it does, you have to re-validate it, which people seem to think is a pain.  I agree with them.  If it needed to be reset while I was away from home, then it's not something that my wife will be able to do.  So she'll effectively be locked out of Netflix.

I never said it was a requirement of Netflix or Unblock-us, but as you can see, it is a requirement for me to use them.  Which takes me back to my original post.

Seems the plans of 50Gb and above at Telecom, which I would be on, have a static IP included.  So if the ADSL speed is comparable to Vodafone, then it's almost a done deal for me.

I woukd take the Pepsi challenge any day of the week saying Telecom speeds are among the best during the day or night. Our customer service is pretty good and our service is reliable... #justsayin
