I have recently had UFB installed and am generally happy, although speeds are nowhere near what others are reporting ...



My main gripe, though, is their phone service, particularly the so-called 'Smart Services'. Of these, we only use the Caller ID and all Diversion. It also has VoiceMail which is somewhat pathetic, being nothing like as user-friendly as our old Uniden DECT system. The Uniden phone flashes a light to tell you that messages are recorded. The 'Smart' VoiceMail, on the other hand, requires that one picks up the phone to hear if it makes strange beeping sounds (these were not explained in any of the documentation - we thought the phone had a fault!) which indicates the messages await. This means picking up the phone everytime one comes inside in case there is a message!!!
I had hoped that one could 'pick and choose' which Smart Services to use, but this is apparently not possible - it's all-or-nothing!
My preference would be able to turn VoiceMail off completely.
Now, before someone says to simply set up the Uniden to answer first, I tried that, but (mysteriously) whilst it usually works, some calls are still being diverted to VoiceMail. Does this suggest that somehow calls are not being 'heard' by the Uniden so that it doesn't respond, or is there an underlying fault in the Kinect phone system?
I suspect the latter, I'm afraid!
I guess I have to make ANOTHER call to their 'help' line!

Being on a 50/20 plan, what speeds were you expecting?

Voicemail, that is the standard behaviour of the ONT and TP SIP server.

They will appreciate the feedback on their documentation and will be able advise how best you can be notified of Voicemail.

Not sure what you mean by 50/20 plan?

Sometimes the download speed gets to 56mbps, or even a little higher.

A buddy gets in the high 90's.

We were simply told that we were going on a 50gb plan, no mention of speed limitations.

Are you testing speed via Wi-Fi or Wired?  Your average Wi-Fi setup won't handle 100Mbps except under perfect conditions.

Perhaps you misheard "50mbit" as "50gbyte"? Because a UFB plan with only 50gigs of data is pretty useless, and that would explain why you're getting speeds of... 50mbit! So if you want 100mbit speeds, ask for the 100mbit plan.

About the voicemail: it's not the best solution, but there aren't that many ways they can notify you about voicemail without being annoying. Conceivably they could email or sms you when you get a message - if you want that, 2talk etc will do that today. Indeed, if you want a full-blooded VOIP service, 2talk is excellent, but it will be an added cost. Probably not much, depends on usage.

While trustpower can't blink LEDs on your phone, you could turn off their voicemail and go back to your built in one on your phone.

Normally trustpower/kinects helpdesk is very good. Its based in NZ I believe.

If you think that's bad, you haven't tried orcon in the last 12 months. Their call centre is located in the 7th level of hell.

Its a shame they cant simply disable the voicemail service, as I suspect then you would be happy. It would simply use your answer-machine and that should be it.

Whoa, I just looked up the trustpower website, and they don't offer a 50mbit plan, and do indeed offer 50gbyte plans! Ugh, how awful. This does indeed mean that you're getting ~half the speed you should be getting, because you are obviously on the 100mbit tier. Call them up when you have a chance, they should be able to check things out and speed you up. Hiccups are common in a young undertaking like UFB. Also, you might want to raise your data cap. You can blast through 50gigs in 1 day easy. And what's the point in getting nice fast internet if you can't use it?!

Analogue answering machine with a Digital VOIP service. Go on further about how this will work well!

(I am presuming this is a typical ond non DECT answering machine), If not get them to disable voicemail, (i am sure there is a * code you can dial...)

And yes.

In UFF areas I understand Trustpower sell 50/20 rather than 30/10. But to jump up to 100/50, you need to pay them an extra $26 / month for the privilege.

I use orcon 'voip' with analogue answer phone, and it works well.....???
