Right... I let my fingers do the walking, and they keep hitting dead ends.....

So over to you lot ;)

I'm after a new ISP.
After quite a few years of being on Orcon (with great service), its time to move, mainly due to cost....

Need:
Min. 150GB data
Unlimited National calling (I live in "Auckland" yet the phone infrastructure says otherwise ;) )
$100 per month max.

Bonus: VDSL :)

Why havent I gone for one of the big players ? Various reasons...
Orcon : Over budget
Slinghsot : Want $50+ service fee to "connect" me.
Vodafone : Same as Slingshot
Telecom : Over budget
Snap : 2 year contract OR $300+ router and over budget
Voyager : Over budget
HD : Over budget

I know the whole "its only $50" to connect me, but wife (she who has the bank password and works in accounts for a company) argues that its then another $5 a month for 10 months, pushing us over budget ;)

So.... any other suggestions, or am I going to have to stay with Orcon on a 5GB data cap just to keep our national calling available ? ;-p (Original Genius plan - wont go into details about how I've survived ;) )

Sign a contract term and the connect fee is wavied so I am guessing you don't want a contract term?

bigpipe? 79$ for unlimited but it is naked so kills your requirement for unlimited national calls :|

And BYO modem/router. You could always get a VoIP service on top from another provider (WxC, 2Talk et al)

Flip is $85 for unlimited data and national calling. Only thing is p2p traffic is managed unlike orcon unlimited

The fee isnt covered by the standard connection terms - seems fudged up to me but checked with the Twitter team and found the terms on the site myself.

Its because I'm on VoIP (Orcon Genius) atm, I don't technically have a "phone connection" so a phone connection has to be made at the exchange (or at least thats how it was put to me by someone...)

I don't think that your new ISP exists.

Ask yourself these questions:

Can you get VDSL?
Do you definitely want VDSL? (this costs more than ADSL)
Do you want to avoid a 12month contract (you were talking about 10 months in your calculations)?
Do you really need a landline at all?
Will most of your "national " calls be within Auckland?
How much use do you make of your landline? (because national calls are now cheap)?

Id say stay with orcon and move up to the unlimited ADSL or fibre 30/10 for $99 a month. You're not gonna get much better. National calling costs $10 extra a month

Otherwise look at bigpipe which would mean buying your own modem and getting a seperate voip service

Seems like BigPipe + WXC would be your cheapest option..

Otherwise Telecom Naked VDSL + WXC if you had a Mobile would be another option, as we give you the modem + install a Master filter.

Since you are already "Naked" as you are using Orcon Genius then moving to another SIP provider shouldn't be that much of an issue? It's just that you would need to purchase your own ATA.

I suggest Orcon ADSL 150GB or Unlimited (with VoIP)
(If you do decide to upgrade to VDSL, be sure to check your downstream attenuation first - less than 10 gives a better prognosis for a good VDSL connection.)

do you definitely need national calls from your landline? Lots of mobile plans come with vast amounts of minutes these days.

You could go with us (Bigpipe), $79 for ADSL with no datacap. It's BYO modem, but you can get one off trademe for $20 (or use an old you probably have knocking around the place). And you have $21 of budget left every month to add onto your mobile plan to bump the minutes up, or subscribe to VOIP.

We do VDSL for $99, also no datacap. VDSL modem can be bought brand new for $150, or second hand for about $80-100. Master splitter recommended unless you already have one, or only a single jackpoint, or can run your own Cat6 from your ETP etc etc

All plans are free connection and leave anytime contract. (no penalties if you don't like it)

Pretty sure that connect fee, is 'connect' (i.e. hook up) unused copper pairs that run to you house, to a port in a cabinet/exchange. If you already have ADSL/VDSL, surely you don't need this, because you are already connected to the Chorus network (or are you in a LLU area connected to Orcon equipment?)

As for what meets your needs, I can't think of any 'mainstream provider' solutions from my own recent research. As I recall the last round of cap increases were over a year ago now which broke Telecom's good run of plan upgrades yearly of late.

Not matter who you are with you will get charged the standard $50. It comes from Chorus. Even in a straight provider churn the $50 fee still prevails.

I wouldn't go with BigPipe purely because you don't get a public IP unless you ask. I know it isn't a huge deal but I feel an ISP should give you a public address unless it is a special circumstance like in a WISP situation.

Most people have absolutely no need for a public IP, and most people wouldn't even know what one is to care, AND they give you one if you ask for one, so of all the possible reasons you might have to choose not to go with an ISP that seems a really really unusual one.

I haven't bothered because I have no need for one. I stream Netflix, torrent, play games online and do anything I want to just fine on CGNAT. It's not like they are charging or making it hard to get one.

(...and Bigpipe don't charge you the $50 fee, so I think you are wrong about the first point.)
