Kopu locals are now enjoying much faster broadband speeds thanks to the Thames-Coromandel District Council's partnership with Chorus.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

"If your computer is more than three years old, seriously consider getting a new one, because the older models can't handle the higher internet speeds. Likewise for your router."

"Now, the faster ADSL2+ is available, with data capacity of 10 Megabits per second (Mbps)."

Upgrade your modem if it can only handle ADSL1 ... but your PC ?

The upgrade PC bit was a sponsored ad by the local PC guy! After all, they said they wanted to promote business.

Yes saw those too, not the best fact checking, also funny PeterReader got me!

Either way, IMPO this is an interesting concept around bringing forward BB rollouts.

A PC that is 3 years old could possibly be still running vista and have 512mb of ram in it.
Most people dont realise how truely old their computers are.

I replaced my pentium 4 last year - it was 10 years old. I always felt like it was only 3.

I think it's a fair call saying buy a new PC. Just last week I was in Hawera and the clients were running their old grey/blue D-Link ADSL1 modem that Telecom gave them 10 years ago and a Windows XP computer.

I swapped the router/modem first and the 'browsing experience' was still rubbish because the pc was such a heap of junk. They were amazed how 'fast' Windows 8 is - and it is running on a sub-$500 machine.

People in these small towns just don't care about their tech enough to buy new gear so someone needs to say get a new PC at some stage.

Serious question - would such a partnership as the one described here be possible in towns like Outram? Might be a bit late for our old friend Tim, but I'm sure he's not the only resident there...

Outram is not on the RBI list so the government or locals will have to pay for a full upgrade.
