Asking on behalf of a friend
Currently no internet connected to house. When ADSL was previously connected it would drop out whenever it rained. They want to reconnect the ADSL, yet fault is almost guaranteed to still be there. But what if the fault is on the underground leadin cable? Would Chorus still dig up the driveway to replace? Or would they refuse to do so and instead say to get UFB installed instead?

Why not just get UFB anyway? - The house is a Housing NZ house. And I doubt that HNZ would approve UFB being installed. Also the house is 1 of 9 that are on a common section. (no cross lease, just 9 standalone HNZ houses on 1 piece of land) So consenting would add extra install time. But in theory would be easy as only 1 owner. (Does anyone have any experience with Housing NZ and UFB?)

The cabinet is only approx 200m along the road. So ADSL would work really well on a good line. (and it is definitely an ISAM) And would certainly be faster than 3G mobile data that they are currently having to spend money on. Also there are at least 2 ISPs that are offering no contract ADSL. And I can easily do a master filter install.

I guess the question can be summarised as - Should they bother with ADSL (considering the fault). And try to get HNZ to approve a UFB install? And have to wait for a UFB install to happen.

And before anyone asks - They don't have sky!!!

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

 



 

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

Yes, they will (should at least) still repair the copper.  There are usually 2 pairs into each house, and many pairs in the street to choose from.  So some combination should work OK.

I am currently in the situation where I had to get ADSL provisioned (ADSL + Edgerouter = very very overkill) and having to wait for UFB which could be weeks/months away. There was a fault with the line (master filter is installed, as always!) causing some issues of which Chorus rather promptly fixed.

So yes, there are still some plenty of customers on xDSL who see no point in going towards UFB and Chorus are still maintaining the network but likely at a lesser state in UFB areas (not 100% sure on this). I'd say it is worth getting xDSL and popping an order for UFB afterwards.

I have had customer in HNZ house and yes UFB consent was approved. I would obviously go for UFB if it is available.

I live in New Windsor, Auckland, there was an entire subdivision of housing NZ a 200 - 300m from me as the crow flies that was renovated and new houses put in etc about 6 years ago due to the motorway extension.
All houses had the copper removed and had fiber installed ( BoF at the time, now UFB ), all users had to get their phones and internet from WXC,I doubt that HNZ will object, it makes their houses more desirable, UFB is being targeted to lower socioeconomic areas ahead of other areas to help bridge the so called digital divide.
I still would get the DSL fixed as it will take months to get UFB installed.

I have seen quite a few UFB orders placed with Spark where Housing NZ is the property owner, and as far as I am aware they have all been granted consent with no issues.

Yes, Chorus does still maintain the copper network.

If you have a working service on our network (fibre or copper) and there is a fault impacting on that service then we will investigate and take appropriate remedial action.

If you decide to go with DSL in the short term, ask your RSP about a full wiring install option - where a splitter & a dedicated jack point will be installed which will isolate the broadband service from the existing in-home telephone cabling - ensuring the best possible service experience.

Is VDSL available? If so, maybe they would like to upgrade to that? That would get a master filter installed.
