I'm upgrading VDSL to fibre and I'd like to have all the existing phone jackpoints in the house stay functional (apart from wanting to use my Cobraphones, we also have a monitored alarm - and yes I'm aware GSM/3G is an option for the alarm).

2Degrees website specifically states that jackpoints won't work after fibre, whereas Spark say they can do integrated wiring to enable jackpoints.

My question is, if I request fibre with a phone line, from 2Degrees or any other ISP (and assuming the install doesn't include IW), can I just get another technician to do the IW? Or does the ISP need to be involved? Does it require ONT or router config?

Or can I ask 2D nicely to do IW at the time of the install?

Guess that was four questions

Yes, another technician could do the internal wiring for you. The ISP doesn't need to be involved.

Depending on which ISP you go with, the phone line will be provided through the ONT or the router. In either case, it should be set up for you by the ISP.

You could ask 2degrees if integrating your existing phone jacks can be done as part of the install. The installs are actually all carried out by the lines company (e.g. Chorus) rather than the ISP, but different ISPs might pay for different install options - I'm not sure about that.

What the installers typically do to integrate you old phone jacks is run a copper cable from a new jack point next to the ONT back to where the phone line comes into the house. The outside line is then disconnected and this new cable is connected in its place. Equally, they can just disconnect the outside line and the phone port on the ONT or router (as applicable) can be plugged into one of the existing phone jacks, if it's near enough.

Anyone can integrate the wiring.

Not many people want to pay to have it done, but it's not rocket science, just basic telephony. You get the 2-pair POTS out of the ATA on the router/ONT, and plug it into the house wiring, after disconnecting it from the Chorus cabling coming from outside. As for your monitored alarm, wiring integration doesn't actually mean anything. It's not an issue of the wiring, but an issue of the technology delivering the phone signal. Basically, it compresses and biffs a lot of stuff that traditional POTS doesn't, so the alarm company gets nothing from you.

2Degrees might offer to ask the LFC to do wiring integration at install, but that'll cost you extra.

When I got fibre installed, the contractor working for Chorus installed an RJ45 plug next to the ONT. Just for linking POTS signal back into the existing phone lines. They installed it even though I told them not to. As I didn't have any working POTS wiring. They linked it back to the ETP, and said that they had to install it just in case my job got picked for auditing. DSL wiring for my house consisted of approx 5m of CAT5 that went between the demark and modem.

Just get fibre installed with 2degrees. getting POTS working could be as simple as just plugging a cable between the FON1 port of the 2deg supplied fritzbox and the voice socket next to the ONT. Although I don't know if the same sockets are installed in non Chorus areas.

If those Cobraphones are cordless - just plug the base station directly into the Fritzbox. Also the Fritzbox has an inbuilt DECT base station, So you might be able to just directly pair the handsets to the Fritzbox. Managed to successfully pair a Telecom branded DECT handset with the Fritzbox that I had originally got for free from them approx 10 years ago, as part of a line rental contract.

As for the alarm - if the alarm is important enough to be moinitored, It is also important enough to have a GSM/3G module added.

Thanks for the replies.

So we're saying that the ATA on the router/ONT is always enabled if the fibre has voice? Seems to me that it doesn't necessarily follow...excuse my ignorance.
