Has anyone signed up with them recently and if so, whats their network service like ie. video streaming (up to 720p) download speeds, gaming etc etc. I watch a lot of internet tv so I'm looking for an ISP that gives good, consistent streaming from the US. Would be good to hear your experience to date, cheers

Just got a flyer in my Univeristy of Auckland student pack with pricing for the 100gb Naked DSL plan. If these guys are any good, pretty damn keen to make the jump!!!

I just changed to NZNet. Very disappointed - I'm getting dialup level speeds in the afternoon. Have a download from Apple currently in the background going at 60KB/sec, using VPN into my network at work I get 1.4MB/sec (my line limit). It looks like NZNet are just reselling Hosting Directs ADSL service based off the trace routes.

Based off this I would be weary of the service offered by Hosting Direct as well. Though if you are trying to decide between NZNet and Hosting Direct, seems like NZNet are just putting a premium on top of the Hosting Direct price and offering no other benefits, so may as well go with Hosting Direct.

Could you please confirm that the 60KB/sec you refer to is what you are describing as 'dialup speed'?

If so, then you're getting about 10 times the speed of a good dialup connection during peak.

If you want fast speeds at all times of day, you won't get it from bargain basement providers unfortunately - I wish it was a different story.

Yep... Dialup speeds would be a max of 56 Kbps (kilobits per second), with an average a lot lower than that.

Download speeds are reported as KB/s (kilobytes per second)... Taking in consideration the averages, etc, 60 KB/s is ten times more than an average dialup connection would give you.

This is a common misunderstanding when people don't differentiate KB and Kb...

I apologise for being emotive with the "dial-up" speed comment. Let me rephrase that.

"I'm getting speeds around the range of 8-9 dialup modems working in tandem, each of which are operating at 56Kbps."

Yes, I understand the difference between KB/sec and Kbps. Like I said, I was being more emotive than anything. When you see your connection operating at 4% of the capacity you know it is capable of - it feels like dial-up.Getting loads of dropped connections as well.

All in all the main message I was trying to get across was to avoid them if you actually want to use the internet in the afternoons / peak time. Off-peak I have no issues at all with the speed they provide. On-peak is a completely different matter.

hmmmm....I rang them up and grilled them about their video streaming ability and of course like any salesman on the phone, they are going to say, 'no problem their Sir' so I think customer feedback is much more valuable information at the moment.

Glad I didn't take up their offer then!

Some guy from NZNet PM'ed me and offered the service, I kindly refused after reading this thread and said "It leaves a lot to be desired"...

So now on the hunt for a fast, well priced (I'm happy to spend the money) and large data cap provider!

So does that mean it's NZNet reselling HD reselling Orcon reselling Telecom wholesale.... that's quite bizzare.

Alot of small ISP's do start out as virtual ISP's until they have enough customers and their own systems in place to handle billing/support etc.

Maybe this is not a issue with NZNet.

I am with vodafone and the last 4 of 5 days can only get max 200kb/s international. Same with my other friend on vodafone, and my other friend on orcon.

umm... because there are people saying they have slow speeds with nznet, where as the issue may not be with them but with international traffic in general ?

Seeing as I know of 3 separate isps that are having super slow international speeds?

thought I explained that in my first post well enough.

Correlation does not equal causation, There are SOOOO many factors in International speed
