I was reading about the Maxnet unlimited deal and Andrew Schick says in the article "They’re not using the internet the way we used to. For example, with no data cap you can cancel your Sky subscription. You don’t need it any more.”.

What does he mean by that? If you do not have a sky subscription, how can you watch the TV you want to watch?

I know there is ISky and I use it a lot myself, but you can only use it if you are a sky subscriber.

What am I missing here?

I'd say he's referring to either outright piracy - download any series you might have otehr wise watched on Sky; or breaking the geoblock, and purchasing said content semi-legitimately direct from the US providers, most likely cheaper than Sky.

TVNZ/TV3 on demand or use some VPN trickery to get Netflix/Hulu here.

OK I get that we can use on demand. But there is no way you can watch sky sport and other sky channels without a sky subscripton is there?

Are others (not anyone of us....) using basic VPN approaches, or purchasing formal VPN options to achieve this? As I understand it, depending on what you're trying to achieve, you need a pay service to ensure you get the bandwidth required to achieve watchable video streaming?

To be perfectly honest, I run OpenVPN myself alongside my mail and other personal things on a VPS that I already pay for in the US, I get decent bandwidth when I need it, and there is no extra outlay as it's not the primary reason why I have the VPS. (Although the secondary reason has made me thought more specifically about the location VPS)

The people I know who are doing this fall into two camps.

1. Using commercial services such as Strong VPN, Astrill, Unblock US etc

or

2. They have a server/network hardware in the States and are doing their own traffic routing.

The usual PR style article with a sales/marketing guy taking a bit of artistic license... you see the same kind of hyperbole in PR from every ISP.

Sorry lads and ladies ... been offline for a wee bit ...

I wasn't really referring to anything in particular in this non-interview-innocent-chat with someone from the media (I should probably learn there is no such thing). It was simply a comment on what the future may look like ... with unlimited broadband and (one day) content available via the internet through multiple content providers as opposed to the single provider we have today.

Data Caps are an annoyance, but across the industry they've been getting larger and in some cases, being done away with all together. In my opinion, they next big push is going to be into the content providing market ... the ISP will deliver it, but more entities need to provide it. Its great to see Quickflix coming into the market, and that will help reduce our reliance on Sky a little bit. We need them and others to do more in this space.

Luckily I had some spare time and applied my google fu, found some reference in computerworld.co.nz which mentioned Star Wars meets Da Vinci Code.

I get the impression I'm supposed to be searching more into this like one of those google problems they use to hire the smartest people out there.. Can't quite make the connection to the whole 34.34 ..34 thing yet.

All I can say is that it is the new 42. Except not really...I can't quite claim it is the meaning of life..

And yes, there are a few breadcrumbs sprinkled around the place, with maybe a slice of bread to come on Monday... then the loaf :)

The 34.34,34 or whatever it is are the co ordinates for Auckland.

ESPN is sky channel 34, and the FYX facebook page has ESPN liked.
