I have a "client" (aka a friend who pays me to keep his computer working) who travels overseas a lot, and needs to be able to use Outlook.
So, got him a new netbook (Win 7), setup Outlook and setup the SMTP to authenticate against his ISP's SMTP server so in theory he should be able to send out emails whereever he is... works well most of the time, or if it dosent, I remote into his system and change it the SMTP to whoever hes connected to at the time.
Now, he was recently in France, the hotel was using Orange as the ISP, changed to their SMTP, all fine... then he jumped onto a cruise ship and couldnt send... I remote in and sure enough, the ship dosent use Orange - so I do an IP lookup and find the connection is via a specialized company that sets up cruise ships with satelite connections etc, but are not an ISP themselves so dont have any mail servers for clients to use. So I figure Ill get him to auth against his ISP again.... fails - gives a bounce back message. Tried my mail server - similar issue. Orcon - similar issue.
He has spoken to the cruise ship IT guy who has no idea why its not working because its working for everyone else.
Ill get him to send me the exact bounce back messages (seems to be different for each server) tonight and will post here....
But in meantime, anyone got any ideas as to why this is happening ? Theres nothing special about the setup, and other users on the cruise ship are happily sending emails using their own setups...
