I bought a Seagate Firecuda 2TB HDD from PB Tech in April and it's been running well since, until a few days ago when it suddenly disappeared from Windows (running Win10) - ie no longer showing in 'This PC'.

I opened up the box and I can hear it still spinning but no connectivity. I tried it in another PC at work but still nothing.

Anybody got any ideas? Or is it dead?

And if I take it back to PB Tech, will they test it and repair? Or will they likely give me another one?

The data on it has some sentimental value, but only personal files.

Any advice welcome, thanks in advance.

With the assumption you have a backup of the data you want to keep, take it back to PB for warranty claim/replacement.  They'll likely just do a swap and they'll only try to recover the data if you ask them, which may incur a charge that won't be covered by the standard warranty.

Hmm...yeah....about that.... Nope.

I might take it into PB Tech at the weekend.

IF you need the data off the dead HD, take it to a data recovery specialist (NOT a PC repair shop, not PB Tech)
It will cost $500 up into the thousands . You will loose warranty.

I think Seagate has as data recovery service now .

I think you've been a bit unlucky because those drives get quite good reviews from Newegg and Amazon customers.

My parents had an external drive fail on them, and it ended up being the enclosure that was the problem. We cracked it open, extracted the drive and managed to get all the data off it.

The drive was well out of warranty so we had nothing to lose.

What does 'disk manager' say when you connect the drive? Sometimes drive letters are not automatically assigned to connected drives, but this will show in disk managers.

Does the event viewer show anything when you insert the drive?

Have you tried checking if bios sees the drive at startup?

Have you tried a USB dock?

Your issue does sound more mechanical in nature. The BIOS check & Disk Manager should be done first. If the device is still detected & "present", you can also try using SpinRite from GRC as this might help recover lost clusters or a missing partition table.

PB Tech advised to contact these guys. Gave them a ring and they seem very positive that they can get the data off, so I'm going to give it a go. No recovery, no fee too.

Tell me about it! I deliberately bought this model as it's supposed to be more reliable....

This is an internal drive, but thanks all the same.

Disk Management does not detect the drive. Haven't checked the event viewer. Not detected in BIOS either. Haven't tried a USB dock, but if it's not detected internally then not sure if that will help.

I would definitely try it via USB before spending money on data recovery or giving up. I have had internal drives fail but was able to read the data via a USB enclosure. They aren't expensive. Maybe you can borrow one.

All hard drives fail. If you care about your data have at least one offsite backup. Read about the 3-2-1 backup rule, which is a minimum.

If not detected in bios then I'd say it is probably toast.

It could be a logic board failure -- i had a board fail on me once , and I happened to have an identical drive handy. So, swapped the logic boards around and recovered my data.

Often drives make a clicking noise of death when they suffer mechanical damage.
