the other day someone got in my fake aussie apple account. This morning I wake to find verification code for my NZ Apple ID. Different email address and passwords. I have several passwords written in a book for different accounts and thought they were moderate strengths. My memory not what it once was. Have looked and so many password managers available paid and free and reviews good and bad for all. With password manager how do you get on when you reinstall windows or buy new computer. I dont mind paying for a good one.

I use Dashlane which i've found to be pretty good. It has some additional features like dark web scanning for your credentials and also will notify you of any breaches so you can change your password.

If you want something not online then i've used KeeWeb https://keeweb.info/ which has online and offline versions.

LastPass. We’ve recently started using it in our house and won’t go back. I’m sure there are others that do everything that LastPass does but I like our easy this is to use.

Regarding setting up a new computer, just make sure you have the password manager installed on a 2nd device like a phone or tablet.

Lastpass and enable two factor authentication for everything that has it available. Apple does. for 2FA I'd say use Authy.

I personally use 1password but at the end of the day everybody can argue about the finer details of what password manager is the best and the failings, but the reality is whether it's 1password or lastpass (or a couple of the other popular options), they're all going to be a million times better than not using a password manager at all.

KeePass. It's free, been around for years, regularly receives updates, can be portable (run it without having to install it, eg from a thumb drive), can import and export in many formats, the password database is a single encrypted file that you can back-up anywhere (I have it set to automatically back-up to a few places whenever I start it or update passwords), does auto-typing so I never have to manually copy/paste, includes a customisable random password generator to create really strong passwords, etc.

I run KeePass on a couple of Windows PCs and a Linux PC and have Keepass2Android on my phone. They all share the same password file so doesn't matter which device I'm on they all have access to my passwords.

Thank you for the suggestions. I do know its a bit like asking how long is a piece of string but also wondered if some should be avoided. I do have 2 factor authorization on sites that have my credit card details

i use enpass which i find good :)

no monthly fee, just 1 off fee for the android or ios app, windows app is free. You can also use 3rd party cloud accounts like dropbox or onedrive for backups of your encrypted password database

So, I use Lastpass, which is very good. Autofills into browsers and many apps. It always gets multi-page user/password forms wrong though (where you enter the username/ password on consecutive pages).

Maybe a good idea to have keepass as a backup copy of lastpass? Updated on occasion.

I've considered a hardcopy list of all my passwords, stored in safe or somewhere impossible for burglars to find. Someday your next of kin might need them to close your accounts/subscriptions and tidy up your online life.

I use aWallet but I'm on Android. As @sbiddle points out, something's gonna be better than nothing.

Yea KeePass is cool for just a single user. We only went away from it because you can't tier access and no audit trail for users.

You can link with Chrome easily with browser extensions and a Keepass add-on.

I think lastpass has a deadman switch for this sort of thing? (Not sure because my preference is also keepass2)

im using Dashlane with a browser extension and mobile app on iOS

One cool feature (not that many sites have integrated it yet) is that there's a button on there you click and it will automatically update the passwords on sites that you are a member of and support the standard.

I got a message pop up on it about 6 months ago saying that my that one of my emails (you can created a list) had been found on the darkweb in a DB breach and that they had automatically gone in and changed my password so there was nothing I needed to do and it was just an advisory message.. I was so surprised I literally said "oh thanks" to my computer haha

It of course notifies you for any other breaches as well.

Dashlane is a bit more expensive than other options but I happily renew it each year

I recommend just taking a look at the promotional vids for Dashlane, Lastpass, 1password etc and seeing what you like the looks of as I can quite confidently say, once you move to a password manager you'll be happy you did whichever you choose

1Password has worked really well for my wife and I over the last few years. We have a shared vault and I have a personal and a business one.

It integrates beautifully in the Apple eco-system and very well (now!) in Windows and Android. Pricing is reasonable and I love the extra features which highlight known compromised passwords in your portfolio along with weak ones and unused 2FA etc.

I moved from RoboForm which seems very unrefined in comparison.
